For whatever reason, I've been feeling slightly more crafty than I have been in a long time. And I've kind of gotten into knitting again because it gives me something to do with my fingers when using the computer is not appropriate. So it was time to whip out all of the knitting needles and start assigning them to projects again . At this point I probably own about a dozen, most likely more, with plans to buy more. (That's because different projects require different types of needles.) They get carted between UCLA and Irvine and I lend some out to people like my mum, who I know has at least one pair at the very least. So I figured it was time to generate a way to keep them all in one spot.
They sell some needle holder things in stores but they were either
super ugly or
didn't hold enough stuff (oops.) After checking out various
homemade needle holders that people online have made and reading some of their tutorials, I decided to draft my own pattern and sew my own knitting needle holder. I think this is what really has put my sewing machine to good use. I've sewn a few dresses with it but they've been kind of half assed and embarrassing to wear in public. This knitting needle holder didn't have to be perfect, just functional. I puttered around Joann's Fabrics trying to find the perfect combination of fabrics and ended up with some whacky pink-white-brown combination.
So, the base color is just a baby pink, and the first diagonal pocket is white and pink stripes. The second pocket is white and pink polka dots, and the bottom pocket has little pink sheep (my favorite!) The exterior of the needle case is a pink, brown, green, and white jacks pattern. You can see it on the flap folding over the tops of the needles, where I put in a zipper (as far as I know, nobody online has done that yet.)
Rolls up into a neat and portable fist sized roll.
Perfect for use as a billy club to bop people over the head with.
I decided, especially with the impending advent of the Harry Potter movie and the Harry Potter book, that I should get off my ass and finally knit the Harry Potter scarf pattern from
atypically knit. I've knit Harry Potter scarves in the past and they've turned out fine, but none of them were completely movie accurate--because that would have taken forever and involved teaching myself circular knitting. So this scarf is the longest and biggest thing I've ever made, twice the size of a normal scarf (it's double sided) and very sturdy.
It's in the design of the scarves used in the
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movies.

The scarf has to be over six feet long. Here it is stretched across Ken's queen sized bed.
I figured if I was going to knit 30,000 or so stitches it would be dumb to make it on acrylic (plastic) 99 cent yarn. So I actually went all out and ordered
Lion Cashmere, which is a nice cashmere/wool/nylon mix that's super soft. It was $6.50 a ball for ten balls. Nine and a half balls later I have a scarf that's nice and warm and actually like, heirloom quality cuz of the material and the fact that it looks pretty generic. I actually felt kind of vindicated because when I went to the El Capitan and the Hollywood & Highland mall, Virgin Megastores was selling
Harry Potter scarves and the difference in quality was unbelievable.
Their scarf was super thin and super scratchy, and clearly machine-made. So I guess if you want a scarf that's worth $20 you buy it from Warner Bros and if you want a scarf that's worth over $300...uh, you make it yourself.
Halfway through knitting I got scared because uh, ::sheepish:: I wasn't sure if I was actually a Ravenclaw or not. So um, I took this quiz and yeah. Whoopdeedoo.
Which Hogwarts house will you be sorted into? Hooray.
Joyce and I are going to the midnight screening of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the Mann Village on Tuesday night. I'm going dressed as a Ravenclaw girl and this time around I decided to upgrade my costume. So I bought a tie from
Wizard Ties, which is a little fan owned business that just sells POA-style ties.
I got my tie in the mail and it was wrapped up all cute and wizard package-y-like.
even has a cute note on it
actual tie upon opening. Good match to the scarf color.
Here's all the cosplay stuff
And here's me in it looking priggish and pretentious blargh.
Unfortunately, I am getting my teeth pulled on the day the 7th book comes out. I guess this means that I am going to be in Irvine so I am going to go pick up my book with Hill and Mairi at midnight (after trudging to Irvine after classes on Friday.) I guess I will sit in my living room with wads of gauze shoved in my mouth reading through the book and hopefully not dripping too much blood on it.
