This is no way a critique, only an observation. Because the fact of the matter is I absolutely love Tom Baker's Doctor and he was born to play the role. But, having recently finished watching the E-Space Trilogy on DVD, I was struck by the horror stories of what it was like to work with him.
We've all heard about what a "tricky" character (my favorite Doctor) William Hartnell could be; particularly his clashes with John Wiles and not warming to Michael Craze and Anneke Wills. But any unpleasantness on Hartnell's part pales in comparison to the tales coming to light about Tom Baker, circa Seasons 15-18.
His animosity toward Louise Jameson, his clashes with Graham Williams which nearly resulted in both men quitting the series, heated arguments with Lalla Ward with the tension coming across onscreen (i.e. refusing to look at her), and hurling scripts across rehearsal rooms and out of windows.
And yet, fans still talk of how difficult William Hartnell could be!
