So I was going to put my quick thoughts on the new Rogue One trailer and then remembered I had never posted my various thoughts I had while the Comic Con trailers/promos were coming out a couple weeks ago, so here’s a lot of trailer thoughts.
DC movies
Well, the Wonder Woman trailer looks promising , but I may just be responding to the fact that it’s a period piece and that gives it something different; although it also appears to take place at least partially in the daylight which puts it up on the DC movies so far. I’m not responding to WW herself very much, but I’m not put off by much of it either. I’ve been saying since BvS that WW is the DCMU’s last chance with me (as I have no intention of seeing Suicide Squad), and allowing myself to be cautiously optimistic about it probably just makes that more true.
The Justice League trailer though, oh boy am I not excited about. It seems a little snappier than MoS/BvS which isn’t a bad move, but it still seems pretty annoying and bad. And is Batman going to continue to have psychic powers, because I don’t like that, but how else does he have ‘feelings’ that something bad is coming? And I do not like this Barry; I never wanted the DCCW-verse to get pulled into the movie-verse but it’s going to be hard not to compare them in terms of The Flash and admittedly it’s just a trailer but this seems lacking; plus I don’t like how the powers are being visualized. There was just nothing I liked about this one, which doesn’t surprise me, considering how I’ve felt about this verse to date, but I was a little more open-minded after the WW trailer looked better.
DCCW
I didn’t find the Arrow trailer than promising. More Curtis is good, but just making a new team I have doubts about. Not crippling doubts as I hope it works, but doubts. And there was so little of the regular characters, you know the ones we already care about, that I’m not entirely encouraged. I’m oddly more interested in the flashback bits as it looks pretty rough in a good way. I’m not going anywhere, but still I wish it had offered more.
The Flash trailer was a lot better, even if I expect that the Flashpoint stuff can’t last more than a few episodes, it’s still going to cast a shadow over Barry all season surely (and he’ll probably bring something back with him to be the big bad). At least it looks like Barry’s going to have royally fucked everything up (not in the full on dystopia way I gather the comic was - I also watched the animated version of it) rather than being the fix it he was hoping for.
LoT looks alright too. Although I am discouraged by the hint that we’ll have to put up with the Hawks again, I hate them so much, but I only saw a shot of the mace, so maybe it won’t happen. I’m not sure I have a lot of material to work with from this trailer, but it looked good.
Marvel
I really liked Luke in JJ but the Luke Cage preview did nothing for me. I still haven’t watched DD s2 (I thought s1 was just okay) so the teasers for s3 did nothing for me. I haven’t been opposed to the casting on Iron Fist although I know others were, but seeing it I start to think, ‘yeah that’s kind of weird’ but aside from that the teaser didn’t give much to work with. Why wasn’t there anything about JJ s2? As for the Defenders overall, it was mostly the Hell’s Kitchen corner of the MCU more than Defenders itself so again not much to comment on. Over all I felt kind of let down, I was expecting to be more excited by something among these previews, even if it’s not my favorite corner of the MCU I thought they could offer me some reason to care.
Am I supposed to be excited by the AoS teaser? because I’m not; like, at all. So this fall is definitely a save and marathon later section it looks like, and I don’t think I’ll be in a rush to get to that marathon, if I’ve even gotten to the fall episodes we’ll see about things in the spring. Thing is, they had actually set up some interesting plot points in the end of last season; and even Ghost Rider (I was raised on 80s/90s PBS I always want to say Ghost Writer) isn’t a terrible idea, but I don’t see how it can go together, and putting the GR stuff above the stuff already set up...kind of pisses me off. I still want to like this show, but it keeps finding ways to let me down.
I wish I was more excited for Doctor Strange than I am; there’s nothing wrong with the promos we’ve gotten so far, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. It’s about how I felt about Ant Man though, and that turned out fine; I’ll probably see it, but it’s still not going to be a priority for me.
Other
I feel about the same way about Fantastic Beasts as I do about Doctor Strange, I wish I was actually excited, I can see reasons I should be, I’m just not.
I feel like I watched some other trailers but I guess I only found that one memorable enough to comment on, even if it was to comment that that’s about as excited as I can get for it.
As for Rogue One...I don’t think I liked this trailer as much as the first one. It still looks pretty good and I fully intend to see it, I just didn’t find the trailer quite as exciting. But then, it isn’t new and unexpected now, the game now is keeping interest rather than grabbing it, and at that it did fine.
