Okay, so their back and I guess it’s time I had things to say again. But not that many even though I haven’t really talked about it in several episodes.
The Originals 1x14
Okay, I’m sick of this show pretending TVD s2&3 didn’t happen. Less than two years ago in universe this famous Mikaelson love had Elijah two seconds away from ripping Klaus’s heart out because he believed Klaus had dumped the rest of the family in the sea. (I’m also sick of the famous Mikaelson love excluding Finn and Kol, especially Kol and his ever increasing time spent in a coffin.) Barely a year ago in universe Rebekah sided with Mikael and team Mystic Falls to kill Klaus which from her perspective was less than five years removed from what happened in New Orleans (during which time she’d gotten over Marcel and got herself daggered over Stefan). Yeah she still had some choice words for Mikael about how he made Klaus the monster he is today, but she was a key and active part of the plan up until she got daggered to keep her from changing her mind.
If I cared as much about TVD s4 as I do s2&3 I’d also be sick of them forgetting how Elijah just fucked off for a season and basically didn’t give a damn about what happened to any of them. (During which time Kol got killed by a team up of a person Elijah chewed Katherine out for killing and a person he keeps making goo goo eyes at, I’m generally of the opinion we should all remember that fact whenever Elijah goes after other people who go after his family.)
Basically what I’m saying is that remembering the history of these characters makes a lot of what they do here read really sideways. If I had come into their story with TO, maybe I’d buy it, but I didn’t so I just don’t.
I almost wish I could find someone who hasn’t seen TVD but would like to see TO. Would they be surprised that Elijah would take someone else’s side over Klaus? Would they be surprised Rebekah is looking for a way to escape Klaus? What would be the general opinion be regarding what was justified on any of their parts, particularly Klaus’s anger? Because from my perspective he’s a cry baby that the other two should rid themselves of and HAVE TRIED to do so in the last few years.
However I continue to be totally down with Elijah/Celeste and their centuries spanning, body hopping, complicated love. Hayley needs to stay out of it because I like Celeste. (On the other hand, the more people insist on commenting on Elijah/Hayley within the show, the more I want Elijah to go “Seriously people, shut up, I’m just not that into her.” I’m not a fan of the ship, but I’m *really* not a fan of the commentary on it in the story.)
Also, and this is bugging me on TVD this season too: why does no one ever take off a vampire’s daylight ring when they’re trying to hold them hostage? I swear the costume people are the only ones who actually remember to put the rings on, because the script never cares if they should logically have them or not.
Anyway, I basically have really mixed feelings on this episode. A lot of what happens just doesn’t work for me; in addition to stuff already said, no way does Klaus not kill...red headed witch whose name I’ve already forgotten even though it was said a lot this episode, he either shouldn’t be all that surprised by Rebekah’s betrayal or should have laid off the monologing and just knifed her (also I can’t decide if the rapey implications of the “I’ll have to take my pleasure in other ways” were intentional or not, but they were uncomfortable, almost more uncomfortable if unintentional); also were was Bastiana? I didn’t exactly dislike the episode, and a lot of the performances were engaging, and I should enjoy watching Elijah kick ass and go shirtless but...the weight of feeling like I’m supposed to be surprised and how much I’m not by what’s going on was really nagging at me during this one.
The problem with watching Arrow and TO on the same night is by the time I’ve blathered about TO, my Arrow thoughts have kind of faded so I still won’t do much commenting on it.
