So I finally sat down and finished watching Children of Earth, so thoughts are still flaily.
So I was pretty much totally spoiled for Ianto's death, but it still hurt. But then Part 5 totally kicked my ass and has made me all wibbly. I actually said to myself a couple times "[Steven]'s totally going to die" but I didn't really expect it to happen and certainly not the way it did.
But because it's RTD I'm crying but...I get it. I can see the choices the characters made to bring it about, and the choices they didn't get to make but still blame themselves for. It hurts because I care about the characters and I hurt for them, the dead and the survivors.
I'm angry at Jack, but I get it (actually way better than I understood Ten I in JE but that's...not a completely separate issue). I understand why he's running, and I'm sure eventually he'll wish he hadn't, and by then it may already be too late.
Gwen was pretty awesome throughout CoE, which basically makes me think that RTD finally worked out how to write her and make me love her. It took me a season and a half to even like her, then I liked her okay but didn't love her, but this time I did. Whether she was being badass or brainy or the kind voice, it all *worked* this time.
Oh Ianto, I don't really have much else to say right now.
Rhys as part of the TW gang, but always primarily there as Gwen's husband, pretty much the way it always should be.
I hope Lois joined Torchwood, she was made of win and awesome, and I wished she'd gotten more to do in the last part, but it didn't hurt the show I guess.
Pretty much *everyone* rocked this series, the big players, Ianto's family, PC Andy, Alice, Frobisher (who was not exactly a good man, but I can tell he wanted to be one), and even the not-UNIT (I never did pick up on who they actually were just eventually figured they weren't UNIT) lady.
By the way Frobisher was an inspired bit of casting/writing. I couldn't even really feel sorry for him in the end because he dug his own grave in an expert fashion, but the classical tragedy of it all was so fitting. Tied in with what in my opinion was actually have been one of the..."real" darkness bits with how the lady who was behind the plan to sacrifice the low performing kids is now in line to become PM (that whole discussion of who to sacrifice was chilling).
Also, gods do I miss Harriet, not that I wish a character I loved so much had been in that position for this crisis, but just in general, Harriet is awesome.
Maybe more thoughts tomorrow, we'll see. I may need a rewatch before I can really say anything more articulate (also I still need to do my RH finale reaction post one of these days...). Hmm, maybe this needs it's own Afterlife Theater.
