And for those of you who are utterly bored.....
My Ministry Involvement
I started out in ministry at the young age of 10 working with my Mom in our church’s 2 yr old class. Since then I’ve worked in almost every aspect of our children’s ministry, doing so mainly between the ages of 10 and 18. After that I had a period of time where my job greatly interfered with ministry, a decision that I regret.
My work in the children’s ministry included both assisting and teaching Sunday school at all age levels. I also spent almost 3 years (ages 15-18 approx) working in our church nursery. This involved working with all 3 age groups (newborn, crawlers, and walkers) as well as occasionally filling in for our team coordinator.
I spent one school year (’98-’99) working directly with our children’s ministry director as her student. I was home schooled and elected to have one of my classes be childhood development. Our director, Terry Erlich, volunteered to supervise my learning for this class. She assigned reading, regularly discussed various aspects of working with children with me, and assigned me work projects to help support the ministry. The summer following this time with Terry, she gave me two major opportunities’ to serve. She trained me to teach back yard Bible clubs using the Children’s Evangelism Fellowship resources and set up 8 of those for me to run over the course of the summer. I also acted as her assistant director for that summers Vacation Bible School Program.
Through out my teen years I participated in outreach events. These varied between serving in the kitchen at “Portland’s Rescue Mission,” handing out lunches and tracts in down town, and a variety of street evangelism events. I was a faithful member of our youth group during this time and participated in every event I could including participating in a small group Bible study.
I spent the ’00-’01 school year working as a leader in our church’s high school ministry. This involved leading a weekly Bible study that averaged 7 girls, participating in Sunday morning and Wednesday night youth services, helping with prayer ministry, and being a cabin leader for two retreats. During that time I also started and co-lead a drama team that encompassed our middle school, high school, and college ministries. We held weekly meetings which included drama games, rehearsals, and a prayer time. I assisted with running the meetings and finding opportunities for our ministry to serve. I also found or wrote most of our performing material.
I began involvement in our church’s missions program in January of ’99. Since then I’ve participated in 5 trips ( 4 week long trips) and helped to send out teams on many more. I went to Molokai’i, Hawaii - March ’99; Sonora, Mexico - October ’99, April ’02, and April ’05; and on a weekend inter-city outreach in Seattle, Washington - August ’00. Over the course of these trips I’ve done a little bit of everything! I’ve worked in kitchens, done street evangelism, assisted with children’s outreach, participated in carnivals and sports out reaches, face painting, done prayer ministry, assisted with classes for church members, and painted a church gym.
On 3 of my trips (Seattle, and the first two Mexico trips) I was on the drama team. This included performing on the streets, for children, for several crusades, for church services, and in 3 prisons. With my most recent trip I worked with our women’s team for the majority of the trip. We put together coffee outreaches in the local churches. We served coffee and cookies, had a music presentation, and my mother and I gave a message.
My currant job is a full time ministry position. I work at Little World Day Care Center at Open House Ministry’s, a homeless shelter in Vancouver, WA. The daycare exists to provide free child-care for the residents in the shelter as they go through the various programs and work to put their lives back together.
In my class I work mainly with ages 3-12, but I end up working with the infants as well. I am in charge of formatting all curriculum for my class and we daily do lessons, art projects, learning activity’s, computer time, snack & lunches, out door play, and free play.
One of the most challenging aspects of this job is dealing with the spiritual and emotional results of the choices my kid’s parents have made. I work with the children, their parents, the councilors, and case managers, to assist with the overall improvement in the stability of the families. Daily I am in the position to do informal counseling with both the children and their parents.
Other than my job, my main focus lately has been supporting missions outreaches. I do this mainly through prayer team support at this time. I have friends who are active in missions and my entire family is active in our missions program. Between the two I usually have at least one person, if not more, that I’m helping to send out!
