I had a few really good things happen yesterday. The biggest and probably most exciting is that I got a call from the Department of Education telling me that my certificate is ready to be picked up. So I am now officially a certified teacher. I have a profession. Crazy. Now if I could just get a job... But it's a good start. Now when I do get some substitute days I'll get paid at the full rate, which is great. I couldn't pick it up yesterday because they called about half an hour before they closed for the weekend and I'm over on the other side of the river without transport other than my feet or a bus, neither of which would get me over there in time, but that's okay, I can pick it up on Monday.
Other interesting things that happened yesterday were two meetings at two schools in the area. The first was at Park Street, a school I'd really like to work at because it's in walking distance and seems like a really nice school. I was really nervous because I had no idea what to expect but the VP was so nice and had all kinds of tips for substituting and getting my french up to par so I can teach core french classes and such. The school is so nice, they renovated about four years ago and they have a really nice cafeteria, gym, library and auditorium. Yup, they have a stage and it's not in the gym, I guess it's a cafetorium technically, anyway, it looks so much nicer than a lot of elementary schools I've been in, but none of the teachers, or the VP or principal or TA's that I met seemed stuck up or anything, they seemed really welcoming. So that was one really good meeting.
Then in the afternoon I went to another school that's also within walking distance, but another kettle of fish entirely. It's an older school, or at least one that hasn't been updated as recently, and much smaller, they don't have a VP so I met with the secretary as the principal was out for the afternoon. They had a crazy security system, especially for such a small school. I had to ring a buzzer to be let in, and when I went into the office I saw that they also have a video camera out there watching the front entrance. Makes me wonder if they've had some sort of trouble there with people coming to the school who shouldn't be there. Not very welcoming though. But the secretary was really nice. We talked a bit about how hard it is to get good substitutes and she said she'd put me on her list of people to call. So that was good and I had a nice walk along the walking trail.
Tony and I went to a new restaurant to celebrate. I remembered why I don't like going to new restaurants. The servers are all new and not quite up to snuff yet. So right from the start we were met at the door by a hostess who looked much less than enthusiastic and our server seemed really nervous and tried to say all the right things but ended up sounding a bit pushy. The food... well... I should know better than to order stir-fry at a place that specializes in steak, it's never good. Tony didn't really like his steak much either so we were pretty happy to leave.
Today has been a bit, well, boring so far. Tony had to go to work this morning and was gone for most of the day. I was going to go to the market but I just couldn't get the energy up to get dressed before he left. So I've mostly just sat around all day and played PS2 and doodled around on my computer. I was meant to go out with Cynthia tonight to the Taproom but she hasn't called or messaged me yet so I'm starting to think something has happened, either she's forgotten or couldn't come to Fredericton or something has come up. I'm a bit miffed just because I really wish she'd at least call and let me know what's going on, but maybe there's some reason she can't get in touch. So we're going to go over to Steve's and hang out with some of Tony's friends. Should be fun anyway, but I was kind of looking forward to a girl's night. C'est la vie.
I hope life is going well for everyone else.
love,
school
