I thought this was the best episode so far this year (last week's a close second, and Listen is definitely third, but only because it felt like it fell apart a little at the end). It was the scariest, the most tense, the villains were just unnerving as hell...and it all just worked. Has Jamie Mathieson written anything else this year? I hope he writes more.
And yeah, I am not sure what's up with Clara. Not sure what's up with the soldier thread, either, especially after Orient Express. I feel like Clara and Danny were doomed from the beginning just because he's a soldier, and I don't know what to make of that. I did really like the role-reversal thing with Clara and the Doctor, though. And the comic relief--TARDIS hermit crab, the sledgehammer...classic.
A lot of this year feels very strange to me, but these two last episodes were the exceptions.

He's only written this one and and Mummy on the Orient Express, and they really are the two best episodes of the series.

I have some issues with this series, but I'm more willing to gloss over them because it's the first one since Moffat took over that I've flat out enjoyed and where I've actually watched the episodes the day (or if not, the next day) of airing. I just adore Peter Capaldi in the role, and when he's matched with writing like Jamie Mathieson's? Yeah, I'm happy.
Ah! I wondered who had written Mummy--never occurred to me that the same non-Moffat person would have written two non-connected episodes in the same year, or that they'd be two in a row! And I'd missed the name in the credits (I've been paying more attention than usual since Moffat's name was popping up so often at the beginning, but I blinked at the wrong moment during Mummy.)
Capaldi was a piece of absolute genius casting. I think (somehwat unpopularly, but whatever) that we needed Matt Smith as the antidote to Smitey McSmiterTennant, and now we've got someone who can really sink his teeth into something brilliantly, with a necessary, radical change. I just haven't felt the episodes were really worthy of him until these two, and I hope it continues!
I think what I really like about Jamie Mathieson’s writing is that he really, really gets Twelve in the way that I’ve been seeing him all along, but which was despite the writing in previous episodes, not because of, if that makes sense. I think he’s pretty much the best writer when it comes to Twelve, and I hope he gets to do more in the future.
I totally agree, I've liked Peter Capaldi's Doctor okay from the beginning, but it's only with these last two episodes that I've absolutely started loving him as the Doctor
