I love John Romita Jr. I mean, what comic book fan doesn't, right? But having finally gotten the chance to read the second Sentry mini, I have to say that his art was throwing me off the story. It's just, I don't know, it just didn't fit the mood of the writing for me. I mean, with the first mini, I felt that Jae Lee's pencils complimented Paul Jenkins writing perfectly. It was dark and mood and just really fit the tone of the whole thing. JRJR's, not so much. I love his art on Eternals, but in Sentry, it kept pulling me out of the story.
:(
Despite this, my Sentry love goes on unabated. I think there are very few Marvel characters I love as much as I have grown to love the Sentry. I love the concept and I love the execution. I enjoyred the intercuts of the "Golden Age Sentry" in the first mini, but in the second? Positively adored the "Golden Age Sentry" panels back to back with the "Ultimate Sentry" (by Brian Michael Bendis! Heeh!) panels, showing the truth behind Sentry's origin.
I just love how very meta it all is.
Anyway. Moving on. I went to my LCS over the weekend and ruthlessly cut down my pull list by half. And some of the comic that stayed on are minis (like Eternals, which has, what? One issue left?) and soon to be ended (I cry for Nextwave), so that's a whole bunch I'm not picking up regularly anymore. Sadness. And it's not like I normally have a huge pull list or anything, but that was still quite a bit to spend on a monthly basis. Ah well.
(I took out 52 as well, and when it wasn't in my saver yesterday, promptly bought the next issue because I am weak and it had Batwoman and Nightwing on the cover. MY LAST ONE I SWEAR!)
I kept on Runaways, but that's going on probationary status once Joss Whedon comes on board. Oh BKV, I will miss you. :(
