Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.
Remember when we used to do these and enjoy them? Let's revisit those days of yore with a good, old-fashioned meme.
weaselmom gave me: Celebrity gossip, high school, England, astronomy, comfort food, Christmas, parades.
CELEBRITY GOSSIP: Oh my goodness. I know nothing. I no longer recognize the faces on People Magazine. I don’t get the jokes on
ROFLRAZZII have no idea who is sleeping with whom, who has a happy marriage, who is divorcing, who is pregnant and by whom. I don’t have any idea how many children Angelina and Brad have adopted. I am culturally bereft.
HIGH SCHOOL: High school was not the best time in my life. But it also was not the worst. I was not tormented by the in-crowd. I had friends I cared about. And I know they cared about me. I didn’t love going to school, but I liked learning from good teachers. There was an extraordinarily good history teacher, Ralph Nussbaum, who instilled a love of reading history. I was also fond of the art & science teachers. My dear friend, Dennis was involved in the Puget Sound Star Trekkers (PSST), a group I was completely uninterested in. But I got to know many of the members because Dennis was emancipated from his parents and lived at Starbase Delta, essentially the clubhouse for the PSST.
ENGLAND: When I was in high school my Dad went to England for Boeing. I don’t remember what he was working on. Dad visited many of the usual tourist sites in London and visited the
Luton Hoo many times. The team was staying nearer to Luton than to London. The Luton Hoo is know a hotel, but wasn’t when Dad visited. Dad has always been a scotch drinker and was perfectly happy with American distillers. He gained an appreciation for good scotch while in England. He drinks very good to extremely good imported scotch now.
I’ve always been interested in visiting England because of the historical links between the UK and USA. I imagine that we’d need several weeks because I’d want to see all the touristy sites in London and then hit the countryside and see many stone circles. I’m not generally very woo-woo. But stone circles are interesting.
ASTRONOMY: I like space pictures and like the concept of space travel. I know very basic things about astronomy. I have the Google Skymap app on my smart phone. I adore pictures of earth from space. I remember the first time I saw
earth from space . I was 8 or 9 and it was a very profound and overwhelming event. I experienced an existential event before I knew what an existential event or crisis could be. The earth is so small in our solar system, even tinier in our galaxy, and a mote in the galaxy. We are smaller still. I felt like I suddenly knew that we are inconsequential. I understood that there is no god and that we must be responsible to each other on this small lonely, beautiful blue planet. People wonder why I collect globes. They are my religion.
COMFORT FOOD: Good ice cream. I’m fond of the ice cream at
Molly Moon . Scott’s pork chops with cranberry horseradish relish. Grilled cheese sandwiches. I don’t really have a go-to comfort food. I’m not a “picky” eater and I’m happily experimental.
CHRISTMAS: I mentioned in ASTRONOMY that I collect globes. Scott & I have enough globe ornaments to decorate a 7’ tree. We augment the globes with Hallmark Star Trek ornaments and star garland. We decorated the tree in this fashion for many, many years. For the last couple years we have decorated the tree with more traditional ornaments and colors. But we may use the globes theme again sometime in the next couple years. Scott & I spend Christmas day with his family and Christmas eve with my parents and dear friends. This year will be a change because my parents will be moving to Colorado. I haven’t spent much time thinking about it because it makes me so sad.
PARADES: We refer to our folding chairs as “parade chairs” because we used to hit as many of the neighborhood Seafair parades as possible. We’ve scaled back to the Lake City Pioneers Day parade and the Greenwood neighborhood parade. We also enjoy the Santa parade on the Friday following Thanksgiving. It’s usually brutally cold. But we bundle up, break out the parade chairs, and huddle together to watch the ballet dancers, marching bands, character balloons, and finally wave like crazed children at Santa.
