I have lj writer's block until an assignment comes along that I really have to finish. Any distraction is a good distraction.
Thanksgiving was untraditional for my family this year. Actually, I have absolutely no recollection of what I was doing last year on Thanksgiving, so maybe it wasn't. This time around we went out to eat because, according to my mom, I don't like turkey. The real event, though, was seeing Jesus Christ Superstar at the Kravitz. I had never seen the movie and was totally unaware of what to expect. As near as I can estimate, it's like seeing the Polyphonic Spree in concert, only replace the lead singer with the love child of Warren Zevon and Axl Rose. The guy who played Jesus was actually the same dude who was in the movie 25 years ago. Also, Judas was played by the lead singer of Living Color and I couldn't decide if Pontius Pilate most resembled Vin Diesel, or Imhotep, or a combination of both. It was exactly the kind of eccentric, ridiculous musical performance that I usually love, but for some reason I wasn't thrilled with it. I think Mary Magdalene, who also played Magenta in the Rocky Horror Picture show, could have saved the production with an impromptu Time Warp rendition. Maybe it had more to do with my attitude toward the season than the play itself. I feel completely listless about the holidays this year what with John in Iraq. Constantly thinking about last year when I got to see my brother and travel to Alaska and North Carolina doesn't really help.
On a somewhat unrelated note, last night I had dinner with some friends from high school and had to ask myself several times throughout the night what the hell I was thinking when I agreed to meet them. Severing all ties with most of the people I went to high school with was the smartest thing I've ever done.
