Chocolate Fic for kohee

Mar 19, 2010 00:28

An unfortunate mistake happened in je_whiteday this year, in that the same assignment was sent out to two people. We didn't realize this happened until it was too late to change assignments and thought it would be unfair to either writer to not post their work. As such, kohee is receiving two fics this year.

Title: The Theory of Evolution
Pairing: Yamashita Tomohisa/Horikita Maki
Rating:
Summary: Love, much like an organism, evolves.
A/N: For kohee. I really hope you like this. And thanks to my beta: my classmate S, who wisely didn't question me about what this was for. Some of the timeline may be a little off, so I apologise for that.

"It is said that there are three stages of love: romantic attraction, physical attraction and lastly emotional attachment."

Horikita Maki never believed herself to be a stereotype, though she was cast as 'the good girl' even in real life. She had different roles but people always saw her the same way. Maybe it was because she remained babyfaced into her twenties or maybe it was the contrast with her own best friend's image. There was evidence all the time, in every magazine, that she was the stereotypical good girl but she knew herself better than any magazine and she knew for sure that in one aspect, she wasn't the stereotype.

Her love had developed in its own way and there was no one who could deny it, even if they weren't allowed to know about it. She hadn't exactly followed the three stages as she had heard they went. She had fallen in love all on her own and against her will. Her stages were somewhat different.

Denial: The Easiest Course to Take

The theory of love at first sight always interested Maki but she refused to believe it. So when she saw Yamapi for the first time, she ignored the way her heart fluttered and chalked it up to the fact that he was the Yamashita Tomohisa. Every girl had some sort of crush on him and it had to just be lust. She had still been a teenager, then, still sharing every single opinion with her best friend. It was easy to brush it off and decide that Yamapi and Kame were just like her older brothers and nothing else.

When Maki met Yamapi again to work on Kurosagi, she once more ignored the fluttering of her heart. He looked even better with dark hair and that had to be the reason she felt that way watching him. He was more serious than before, his group put on hiatus and the two suspended members being completely separated from the others. It hadn't even been a year between them meeting but it had made so much difference. She plied him with hot chocolate until he opened up to her about everything. There was nothing special about it, she told herself, they were just friends.

The third time they met for work, the Kurosagi movie, she had her opinion reinforced. Yamapi was seeing someone, a model called Abiru Yuu. The ache in her chest was just muscle strain, Maki told herself, it wasn't something silly like heartbreak. And even if it was, she would have only herself to blame for not making a move. Yamapi seemed happy, though, and that was enough for Maki just then. He had a good girlfriend and NEWS was getting together again, now only with six members, so he had all the support he needed. That year, she also met Toma and he brightened her days easily. He was no Yamapi but if she didn't have such a fixation on Yamapi, it wasn't love!, then she would have fallen for Toma without a second thought. A few months before the premiere of the movie, Yamapi and Abiru broke up and the happy bubble that he and Maki had been in was gone. Yamapi seemed almost lost without Abiru and Maki didn't like it. She revised her thoughts immediately. It hadn't been heartbreak, it had been a gut feeling that this wouldn't end well for Yamapi.

Everyone else will know...but you won't.

"I tried to be the best boyfriend I could," Yamapi said miserably, a little bit drunk and only getting moreso. "You know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Ryo said, still nursing his first drink. They weren't there for very long before Yamapi started talking about the break up. "I think you just need to take your mind of it. And a woman who cheats isn't good woman for you."

"Right, right..." Yamapi sighed. "I wish she was more like Maki-chan, you know?"

"Maki? As in Horikita?" Ryo smirked. "I didn't know you liked her. She has such a clean image compared to...you know."

"I don't like her, we're just friends. She made me feel better about the hiatus while filming Kurosagi."

"Suuuure." Ryo knew Yamapi. Ryo also knew that he understood matters of the heart better than Yamapi. Therefore, he didn't say anything else.

"Isn't it horrible, Mei-chan?" Maki asked, licking ice cream off her spoon while watching TV with Meisa.

"You sound like you're in love." Meisa snorted, digging her spoon into the ice cream once more. She sounded so worldly and looked so mature in comparison to Maki that sometimes Maki felt the urge to agree with everything her friend said. This wasn't one of those times.

"It's not love. I'm just worried about him. He's my friend," Maki said defensively. "Not everything between a man and a woman has to be romantic."

"I know that! I get along with my costars just fine without making it into a relationship too. It's just that I'm positive you are in love with Yamapi."

Maki sighed. She didn't always understand Meisa's train of thought.

There comes a turning point...

2009 brought changes and rumours and new girlfriends for Yamapi. He dated Kagami Seira and Maki again felt the ache in her chest. He had two on-screen romanctic interests in one drama, she noted, watching the episodes of Buzzer Beat that Meisa had recorded for her while they were both out, busy with work. She knew this feeling. It was the same feeling she had gotten when Meisa started to get more acting work and the feeling she had when Meisa made her musical debut. It was jealousy.

"I'm not jealous," she told herself. "Because it isn't love. It isn't even a silly crush."

She went through a period of ignoring Yamapi, up until he broke up with Seira, and again when rumours of him dating Kitagawa Keiko surfaced. It was somewhere in this space of time that she came to realise that her jealousy was indeed jealousy. She thought it might have been when Yamapi was interviewed on TV and said that he wasn't 'daite'ing any 'señorita'.

"It's such a stupid pun to use. Why would he go along with it? Daite Señorita is our song." The last sentence made her realise that she was taking everything too seriously, considering that everything now was being based on rumours. There was no way to know if he was with Keiko or not. Either way, she strengthened her resolve. She would confess to him!

Valentine's Day 2010

"Please accept my feelings, Yamashita-kun~" Maki said, teasing and placing a box on Yamapi's stomach. "My first chocolates for you. Mei-chan helped me make them."

"There's poison in them, then?" Yamapi asked but he didn't move, tugging Maki onto the bed with him instead. It was rare that either of them had a day off but Maki only had filming in the night and Yamapi didn't have to work until the afternoon, so they had taken advantage of the night before. "Thank you, though. I'm sure they'll be good."

Maki nodded, kissing Yamapi sweetly and slowly but refusing to be pulled all the way down, just in case she really did crush her chocolates. The confession, when she got to it the year before, had been surprisingly anti-climactic. She had expected there to be some sort of confusion but Yamapi had smiled and nodded and all was right with Maki's world again, even if Yamapi had sounded like a total ass.

"I've liked you for four years now and I'm not going to wait anymore! I love you!" Maki said, shutting her eyes so she wouldn't have to see him.

"Well that's good." Yamapi smiled. "I'd be happy to go out with Maki-chan after four years of her pining after me."

"I can't believe you had me agonising for so long and then just accepted me like that," Maki sighed, tucked under the covers with Yamapi once more. "I'm glad I confessed but your reply really sounded mean..."

"So am I. I was worried that you were never going to do it."

"Well just get me something good for White Day and we'll call it even," Maki laughed, kissing Yamapi again and only getting more gleeful when Yamapi inquired as to how much time Maki and Meisa were spending together. She had never been so happy to dicredit the stages of love theory before.

Horikita Maki refused to be a stereotype, especially in love.
