Game of Thrones : A Picspam Guide

Apr 24, 2011 23:41

I just wanted a reason to picspam Game of Thrones, and well I thought a visual guide would be a nice way to keep track of things we learn each episode. I'll try to update this as the series goes along and even though I've read the books (well, techinically only two books so far) there will be no spoilers or additional information and I'll follow strictly to what HBO shows us, as they might have slightly differences.

Screencaps by me. All information taken from the HBO's Viewer Guide (which is super helpful if you want more detailed descriptions) and George R.R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.

THE WALL, THE NORTH.

The Wall is a massive wall of ice on the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. According to legends, it was made 8000 years ago by Brandon the Builder, in order to protect the Seven Kingdoms from a threat from the North. Of the nineteen castles along the wall only three are still manned: Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, Shadow Tower and Castle Black, serving as the main headquarters.

NIGHT'S WATCH
... and beyond The Wall

NIGHT'S WATCH
Founded eons ago, the Night's Watch protects the Seven Kingdoms from the wilds of the Far North. Members of the Night's Watch swear an oath of duty, one that binds them to the job for life, and forbids them from marrying, fathering children or holding land. Desertion is a crime punishable by death.

WILDLINGS
A Wildling is, by definition, any person that lives North of the Wall. These people are viewed as barbarians by those south of the Wall, people viewed by the Wildlings as weak and soft. There are tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of Wildlings split into hundreads of tribes, clans, villiges and raiding parties.

WHITE WALKERS
The Others, known amongst the Wildlings as White Walkers, are a race of creatures that have been recorded to exist north of the Wall. Before the recent events of their reappearance the Others hade not been seen on Westeros since the end of The Long Night over 8,000 years ago. The Others have traditionally been regarded as extinct or even simply a fairy tale.

WINTERFELL, THE NORTH.

Winterfell is the name given to the ancestral castle of House Stark, where they rule The North, stretching to The Wall. The castle has deep catacombs where the bodies of Starks are buried. Statues mark the crypts of the former lords of Winterfell and the old Kings of the North.

HOUSE STARK
"Winter is Coming"
The Starks trace their descent from Brandon the Builder and the ancient Kings of Winter. For thousands of years, they ruled from Winterfell as Kings in the North, until Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt, chose to swear fealty to Aegon the Dragon rather than give battle. Their blazon is a grey direwolf on an ice-white field.

LORD EDDARD “NED” STARK (Sean Bean)
Lord of Winterfell • Warden of the North

CATELYN “CAT” STARK nee TULLY (Michelle Fairley)
Wife of Lord Ned Stark

Catelyn married Lord Eddard Stark after his brother Brandon (to whom she was betrothed) was murdered by Aerys Targaryen. Though she barely knew Ned at the time of their wedding, their love has grown strong over the years, and as the Lady of Winterfell, Catelyn has raised his five legitimate children. Her husband’s bastard, Jon Snow, however, is an embarrassment she has refused to accept.

JON SNOW (Kit Harington)
Bastard son of Ned Stark

ROBB STARK (Richard Madden)
Eldest son of Ned and Catelyn Stark • Heir To Winterfell

SANSA STARK (Sophie Turner)
Eldest daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark

ARYA STARK (Maisie Williams)
Youngest daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark

BRANDON “Bran” STARK (Isaac Hempstead-Wright)
Son of Ned and Catelyn Stark

other family members mentioned: RICKON STARK (I realise he's already appeared in 1.01 but I totally forgot to screencap him so I'll add it in next time)

KING’S LANDING, CROWNLANDS.

King's Landing is the capital of Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms. The royal castle, called the Red Keep, sits on Aegon's Hill and is home to the Iron Throne. The lands surrounding King's Landing are ruled directly by the crown on the Iron Throne. Besides King's Landing, which is the largest city in Westeros, the Crownlands also includes the original Targaryen homeland on the island of Dragonstone.

HOUSE BARATHEON
“Ours is the Fury”
The youngest of the Great Houses, born during the Wars of Conquest. Its founder, Orys Baratheon, was rumored to be Aegon the Dragon’s bastard brother. Orys rose through the ranks to become one of Aegon’s fiercest commanders. When he defeated and slew Argilac the Arrogant, the last Storm King, Aegon rewarded him with Argilac’s castle, lands, and daughter. Orys took the girl to bride, and adopted the banner, honors, and words of her line. The Baratheon sigil is a crowned stag, black, on a golden field.

KING ROBERT BARATHEON (Mark Addy)
the First of His Name • Led the Rebellion against Aerys Targaryen

QUEEN CERSEI BARATHEON nee LANNISTER (Lena Headey)
Wife to King Baratheon • Twin of Jaime Lannister

The only daughter of Tywin Lannister, former Hand of the King and the richest man in the Seven Kingdoms. Her father had initially hoped to marry her to Rhaegar Targaryen, but that offer was refused by the Mad King Aerys. While she is close with her twin Jaime, she can barely tolerate her brother Tyrion.

For some reason HBO has Cersei listed as "Cersei Baratheon" which is technically true, but I don't shes ever taken that name as she's nearly always "Cersei Lannister"

other family members mentioned: JOFFREY BARATHEON (I realise he's already appeared in 1.01 but I totally forgot to screencap him so I'll add it in next time)

HOUSE LANNISTER
"Hear Me Roar”
Fair-haired, tall, and handsome, the Lannisters are the blood of Andal adventurers who carved out a mighty kingdom in the western hills and valleys. Through the female line they boast of descent from Lann the Clever, the legendary trickster of the Age of Heroes. The gold of Casterly Rock and the Golden Tooth has made them the wealthiest of the Great Houses. Their sigil is a golden lion upon a crimson field.

SER JAIME “Kingslayer” LANNISTER (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
Heir to Casterly Rock • Twin of Cersei Lannister

A celebrated knight and member of the Kingsguard, his reputation as “The Kingslayer” dogs him: It was he who slew the Mad King, in violation of his oath to protect the royal family.

TYRION LANNISTER (Peter Dinklage)
Known as the "Imp"

PENTOS, ESSOS.

Across the narrow sea, Pentos is one of Free Cities, beyond the reach of the Seven Kingdoms. They stay neutral by trading with Westeros and paying tribute to the Dothraki.

HOUSE TARGARYEN
“Fire and Blood”
The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, descended from the high lords of the ancient Freehold of Valyria, their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white. Aegon the Dragon’s ancestors escaped the Doom of Valyria and the chaos and slaughter that followed to settle on Dragonstone, a rocky island in the narrow sea. It was from there that Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys sailed to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. To preserve the blood royal and keep it pure, House Targaryen has often followed the Valyrian custom of wedding brother to sister. Aegon himself took both his sisters to wife, and fathered sons on each. The Targaryen banner is a three-headed dragon, red on black, the three heads representing Aegon and his sisters.

VISERYS TARGARYEN (Harry Lloyd)
Prince Visery, the Third of His Name

DAENERYS “DANY” TARGARYEN (Emilia Clarke)
Princess Daenerys, known as Daenerys Stormborn • Khaleesi of the Dothkaki

DROGO (Jason Momoa)
Khal of the Dothkaki • Has not has his hair cut, i.e never defeated in battle

JORAH MORMONT (Iain Glen)
Exiled knight • Protector of Daenerys
