picspammy Challenge #17, Fives: 5 Winter Olympians To Watch

Feb 07, 2010 21:08

And it's another month, so another challenge over at picspammy. I thought this was quite appropriately timed as there are also five days left until the Opening Ceremony. Everyone can feel free to disagree with me, but this is just my favourites to win the gold medals.

Kim Yu-NaSport: Figure Skating Ladies' Singles
Country: South Korea
Recent Titles/Achivements:
   • 2009 World Championships (Gold)
   • 2009 Four Continents Championships (Gold)
   • 2009/2010 Grand Prix Final (Gold) She's an absolutely beautiful skater, her performances leave you speechless - check out her routine for the 2009 WC FS here. She's already a champion, and I really hope she'll be able to pull off an Olympic gold performance but this year's competition is really strong (as of February 2010 she's ranked first in the world). I'm sure she'll leave with a medal and technically she's still young enough to come back strong next time.

Lindsey VonnSport: Alpine Skiing
Country: United States
Recent Titles/Achivements:
   • 2009 World Cup (Gold)
   • 2008 World Cup 2008 (Gold)
   • 2009 World Championships (Gold) I have a whole new appreciation for skiing after it took me forever to learn, let alone do it fast and do it well. The first American female to win back-to-back overall World Cups and widely regarded as the most successful female skier at present - she was winning races with her arm in a brace! Lindsey's bound to walk away with gold medals, the question is: how many?

Team RussiaSport: Ice Hockey
Country: Russia
Recent Titles/Achivements:
   • 2006 Winter Olympics (4th)
   • 2008 IIHF World Championship (Gold)
   • Hart Memorial Trophy (Alexander Ovechkin/2009)
   • Maurice Richard Trophy (Alexander Ovechkin/2009)
   • Lester B Trophy (Alexander Ovechkin/2009)
   • Selke Trophy (Pavel Datsyuk/2009)
   • Art Ross Trophy (Evgeni Malkin/2009)
   • Conn Smythe Trophy (Evgeni Malkin/2009) On paper, the medal is theirs. This team holds so much potential, but I also think they're most vunerable to failing because of the pressure and with the expection of Ovechkin/Semin we don't actually know how the rest of the team's chemistry is right now. I would love to see the different line combinations that will be played. The perfect gold medal match will either be against Canada or Sweden.

Tanith Belbin and Ben AgostoSport: Ice Dancing (Figure Skating)
Country: United States
Recent Titles/Achivements:
   • 2009 World Championships (Silver)
   • 2008 US Championship (Gold)
   • 2006 Four Continents Championships (Gold) I think after what happened at the US National Championships, the two of them are going to come back even stronger. They were five year consectutive champions, with the expection of last year when they pulled out due to injury but they are still my favourites in the US category. They have the better looking resume, and more importantly, the experience thats going to prove useful in the major competitions.

Zhang Dan and Zhang HaoSport: Figure Skating Pairs
Country: China
Recent Titles/Achivements:
   • 2010 Four Continents Championships (Gold)
   • 2009 World Championship (Silver)
   • 2008 World Championship (Silver)
   • 2006 Winter Olympics 2006 (Silver) Who watched them back in 2006? That was a crazy fall and if it wasn't for the fact that you lose points for mistakes they should have gotten the gold medal for effort and bravery alone. Even nowadays, replaying the fall makes me cringe, so it was amazing to see Hao back on the ice within minutes. I think (and hope) they've played second best enough, and its about time they win first place.
