“Oh-chan? Oh-chan~” he sing-songed, poking at the chubby cheeks of one Ohno Satoshi.

“Hey, time to wake up sleepy head!” Now, he lightly tapped his face to wake him up. After a minute of failing to wake up Ohno, he had no choice but to use his last resort, which worked every time. With a smirk, he slowly leaned his face to Ohno’s and wasted no time in sealing their lips together. In a blink of an eye, Ohno woke up with wide eyes.

“Good morning, Oh-chan!” Nino happily said. He couldn’t hide his laughter about the fact that after all this time, the trick still worked. When he’s asleep, you can’t wake Ohno no matter how hard you try, but since his lips were sensitive when he’s asleep, he’ll easily wake up when it is touched. Like sleeping beauty, Nino once teased.

“Hmp.” Ohno gave a pout and lazily stretched his limbs. “You’ve been doing that since we were little, we’re grown-ups you know.” Ohno said with a childish tone.

“We’re grown-ups alright. Now, why don’t you be a grown-up and prepare for your day? You have a lot of work ahead of you.” Nino answered back with a smirk.

“Hmp. Fine, wait for me outside then. I’ll just take a bath.”

“Should I take that painting with me?”

“Yes, please.”

*

After safely tucking the painting in the back, he went to the driver’s seat and patiently waited for Ohno. He still couldn’t believe that they were in this situation, Ohno as a famous celebrity and he as his manager. As his childhood friend, he still couldn’t fathom how an introverted, soft-spoken man like him become someone famous, someone influential. Though he was forever thankful that Ohno remained the same Ohno even after rising to the top. He was still the Ohno Satoshi he knew and treasured.

His train of thoughts was interrupted when he heard a knock on his car window. He immediately opened the passenger seat and let Ohno in.

“Did something good happen? You look glowing today.” Ohno asked as Nino started driving them to the agency.

“Nothing much, I just remembered something nice.” Ohno hummed in response and leaned on the car window, gazing at the blurred surroundings. Afterwards, silence ensued until they reached the agency building. Artists of this agency had their own mini-rooms in the building that may serve as a place to stay before or after work. The mini rooms were modeled to be like a small home to the artists. Nino and Ohno were now headed to Ohno’s mini-room to chill a little and so Nino could brief Ohno for his schedule.

“We’ll be heading to the TV station by 9, which is an hour from now, for the shooting of your drama, then as per your request we’ll drive by your favourite Ramen Shop for lunch. Then we’ll be dropping off your painting at your exhibit by 2 in the afternoon. You’ll also do a short greeting and some Q&A for the press there. Next is your magazine shoot at 4 in the studio and lastly recording for your new single at 7 in the evening. Clear?”

“Yes, sir!” Ohno said, doing a salute which made them both laugh.

“Though, I’ll be with you all day so no problem.” Nino stated, feeling proud that he’d been doing a fine job lately. Ohno just smiled in return and cupped Nino’s face, moving a bit so that their faces were once again only inches apart.

“Don’t worry, you’ve been doing this for the past 5? 6? years, so I’m sure nothing will ever go wrong, okay?” Ohno whispered, rubbing their noses together like Eskimos. Afterwards, Ohno went to the mini-fridge to get them drinks. Nino sank deeper in the sofa he was sitting in, a blush creeping on his cheeks.

“Are you okay, Nino? Here, have some water.” He reached for the bottled water Ohno offered while trying to hide his blushing face from Ohno.

“Oh, Maru wants to talk to me for a bit.” Ohno said looking up from his phone and was now making his way to the door.

“Don’t forget to get back here before 9!”

“I will!” Ohno shouted back as the door slammed shut. Nino sighed and slid on the sofa in a horizontal position. His heart was beating so fast. It had always been the case whenever he was near Ohno. He couldn’t believe he survived being his manager when he was like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode when his limits were pushed too far.

Nino had been holding a crush on Ohno since middle school, when he was made aware of what the strange feeling in heart was every time Ohno gave him a warm smile or when they were cuddling with each other at the school’s roof top one winter morning. He chose to stay as his manager because he couldn’t let any stranger be that close to Ohno, call him selfish but he just wanted to protect Ohno the best he could as a friend if he couldn’t be his lover. He wanted so badly to confess, to make Ohno realize how much he loved him but he knew that Ohno only saw him as a precious friend, a brother. And ever since becoming a celebrity, he was afraid that his confession would only cause some scandal which may damage Ohno’s career.

He took some deep breaths until he felt himself calm down. Then, he decided to busy himself with paper work while waiting for Ohno in hopes of keeping his mind clear.

*

It was already 8:50 in the morning with an anxious Ninomiya Kazunari and a missing Ohno Satoshi.

Nino trusted Ohno that he followed his schedule well, but now that he was still not here when it was already close to their agreed time, Nino began to panic. He wanted to run around the building to search for him but he’d just waste his energy in doing so. He kept calling Ohno’s phone but soon found out that he had left it on the table. With just a few minutes left (Nino couldn’t afford Ohno to be late for the first day of his drama shooting), Nino resorted to his first option.

Just as he opened the door with a too much force, he almost bumped into a spaced out Ohno.

“Hey, hey, what’s with the rush Nino?” Ohno asked which seemed to recover from his daydream.

“Oh-chan!” Nino slapped him on the shoulder with a little bit unintended force, “I said to be here before 9. Do you know what time it is?! You still have some prep-“ Ohno stopped Nino’s non-stop whining with a kiss. Nino was surprised by the gesture but recovered almost immediately and pushed Ohno away. Seeing that they were still standing by the door way, Nino dragged Ohno inside and slammed the door shut.

“Oh-chan!”

“What? You were panicking, I had to do something otherwise you won’t calm down.”

“B-but-“

“You do that to me all the time, why can’t I initiate one?” Ohno stubbornly argued, seemingly innocent to why Nino was questioning his action in the first place.

“But we were outside, what if someone saw what you did and make it into a scandal?” Nino still couldn’t believe his best friend was this ignorant.

“Hmm, you’re right.” Ohno finally agreed, “then how about now?” He asked and was about to give Nino another one but was right away blocked by Nino’s hands.

“Oh-chan?”

“Am I grounded now, mom?” Ohno jokingly answered.

“No. Firstly, I’m not your mom, I am your manager. Second, what do you have to do?”

“Get ready for shooting, I get it.” Ohno said with a pout adorning his lips which made Nino laugh.

*

Being Ohno’s childhood friend had its perks when working as his manager. He knew every change in Ohno’s behaviour, no matter how subtle it may be.

Just like what was happening within the past weeks. For one, Ohno didn’t go out with Nino anymore. Whenever Ohno wanted to quickly pass by the convenience store or buy some stuff in the mall, he always asked Nino to accompany him. Even though Nino insisted that he do it himself since he was already an adult, Ohno insisted.

And then Ohno’s too frequent smiling nowadays. Not that he didn’t smile, he did which made him more cute in Nino’s eyes, but Nino knew his smile too well to notice such changes. It was like his smiles were more genuine and so vibrant with feelings. Being someone close to Ohno, he started worrying that something was wrong with him.

On one Saturday evening, when Ohno asked for permission to go out alone at night, Nino decided to secretly follow him to his destination. It was only a few blocks away from Ohno’s house. Ohno went inside a cozy looking Italian restaurant. Nino stayed at the park parallel to the restaurant and sat on one of the benches. Good thing there were a couple of few people still lingering in the park and it was not hard to blend in and not look like a creepy stalker. He pretended to fumble about his phone while constantly glancing at the restaurant.

After a half hour or so, Ohno emerged from the restaurant followed by a taller man. From the distance, Nino could only make out his thick eyebrows and stylish get-up, compared to Ohno’s regular clothes. They waved good bye at each other before going separate ways.

*

Nino continued his little stalking trip every time Ohno went out alone and the latter didn’t seem to notice him. It was the same person as always. They went to restaurants, shops, malls, arcades and such that if you didn’t personally know them, you might as well call them lovers. And to prove his suspicions, Nino caught the taller guy give Ohno a quick kiss on the cheeks after their so-called date at the arcade.

Nino was so angry, not because Ohno had a date, but because he didn’t even bother telling Nino about it. He was still Ohno’s childhood and best friend after all. Well, there were also a part of him that was feeling jealous but he didn’t want to admit it.

After stalking him for the last time, he let Ohno get home first before he followed. He took a stroll around the neighborhood to calm himself down before facing Ohno. He made sure that his feelings were kept intact and there was a sense of professionalism in him so as to not personalize his lecture later on.

When he entered Ohno’s house, he was greeted by his soft ‘Welcome Home’ by Ohno, who was sitting at the sofa.

“Oh-chan, we need to talk.” There was no trace of waver in Nino’s voice so Ohno complied without question. They went to the kitchen and sat at the table facing each other.

“Why didn’t you tell me all of this?” The look in Ohno’s eyes hardened a bit, signifying that he knew what Nino was talking about.

“You could’ve been trailed by the paparazzi or something bad might happen to you!”

“This is the reason why I didn’t want to tell you. You’ll just lecture me all day long about how it is dangerous for a celebrity like me to roam around in the city with a date just because there might be a chance that a scandal might ensue.”

“Well am I wrong?! I’m telling you this as your manager. I’m responsible for your well being, you know?!” Nino banged his hands on the table, the tension in the air getting thicker. “It wasn’t hard for me to stalk you in your trips with your date without being noticed. You’re letting your guard down too much for that guy.”

“It’s only you who’s stalking me, why would I be alarmed? So are you saying that I should stop seeing him for my own good? That I should let go of my happiness just so I can be safe?!”

“All I am saying is for you to take precautions. I’m not even saying this as your manager anymore. I’m saying this as your friend, your childhood friend. I’m so worried about you, you know? Though I don’t think you see me as what I think you do. You didn’t even tell me, as your friend, that you have a lover already.” Nino’s face was blank; he stared at Ohno for a bit longer that he wanted. When he couldn’t take the tension around them anymore, he angrily stormed out of the house.

It only sank in on Ohno a minute too late; Nino was already on his car on the road when he wanted to stop him. Feeling devastated, he went to his room and grabbed his phone; calling Nino’s phone. The calls didn’t get through.

*

Ohno woke up to the noisy ringtone of his phone, not like his usual mornings when Nino would kiss him awake. Sighing, he reached for his phone and found a message from Nino.

From: Ninomiya-kun
Good morning! Head to the agency, your schedule is waiting for you in your room. Sorry, my mom had an emergency today so you’re on your own. You’re a grown-up already so I know you can do it!
-Nino

Ohno knew Nino was lying, it was too convenient for an emergency at his home after their argument last night. Even so, what was done was done. He had to face his day all alone.

*

“Oh, Kazu! What a pleasant surprise!” He was welcomed by his mom’s embrace and the smell of a meal inside the house. He was happy to be home, especially at times like this.

“Hi mom.” He shyly greeted her, entering the house with a small travelling case in tow.

“Are you on a holiday? You usually tell us before you visit. Oh dear, I should probably add another serving to the food I’m preparing.” Nino smiled, his mom was the same as always. He went to the kitchen as well, took a seat at the dining table and watched his mom cook.

“So?”

“Hmm?”

“I asked you a question right?”

“Oh. Ah, yes the agency gave me a vacation.”

“How long?”

“A week, I guess.”

“How about Ohno-kun?” His expression changed a bit at the mention of his name though he didn’t want to let her notice it.

“He can manage, he’s a grown-up afterall.” He said and shrugged, didn’t notice his sister creeping up behind him.

“Kazu!” Nino soon found himself in a tight embrace from his sister.

“N-neechan, can’t.. breathe.”

*

After arriving at his room, he quickly searched for his schedule which Nino had laid neatly at his desk. The paper was almost full of Nino’s neat hand writing, his day was full of work to do. However, since his earliest assignment would start at 10, he decided to laze around for a bit.

He was surprised to see Sakurai Sho, employee at their agency, to barge in his room.

“Eh? Ninomiya-kun didn’t tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

“The agency kept telling him that he needed to free up some time since he kept refusing to use his vacation allotment. The agency knows how hard working he is in being your manager but the higher-ups were worried that he’s stressed himself too much. He agreed to get his vacation just this morning though.”

“Until when is his vacation?” Ohno was getting worried as well.

“Don’t know. A week, maybe?

*

Ohno felt, more or less, what Nino must’ve felt when he kept his love life a secret. Not knowing about his sudden vacation and was even told of a lie to cover it, really hurt Ohno. Nino’s words echoed in his mind as Sho was now escorting him to his home after a long day’s work.

Nino…

“Ohno-kun, we’re here.” He was pulled out from his thoughts when Sho stopped in front of his house.

“Oh, thank you Sho-kun.” He mumbled and dragged himself to his house. The first thing he did was throw himself on his bed, face first and let some of his tears fall.

He was used with Nino by his side almost all the time ever since childhood that it felt wrong in many places to suddenly not have him by his side without notice. In an attempt to forget the sadness that was slowly eating him up, he called Jun so he can have someone to talk to. He carefully got up and made his way out to meet with Jun.

*

“Hey, Kazu is there something wrong?” Nino was in his old bed, staring at the ceiling when his sister went inside.

“Same as always, you still forget to knock.” His sister smiled at his retort to which he also smiled back. He sat cross-legged on his bed and made some room for his sister.

“So, tell me, my cutest little brother. What’s bothering you that made you come back here all of a sudden?”

“You really know me too well, nee-chan.”

*

“Satoshi-kun! I’m here.” Ohno swiftly made his way to the table where Jun sat, checking his disguise to make sure no one noticed his presence.

“Hey there.” Ohno greeted him, still not taking his face mask off of fear that Jun would see how miserable his face was now.

“So, how was your day?”

“Fine, I guess.” He shrugged, but he couldn’t contain it anymore. With a sigh, he started blabbering about Nino, “Fine may not be the right word. My best friend just left me without notice today and he even lied about it. We’ve been friends for a long time but he suddenly went without nothing.” He finished his sentence and looked at Jun.

Oh no…

He forgot that Jun was a person that easily got jealous.

“All you kept talking about is your best friend, Satoshi-kun. In all our dates, nothing comes out from you but your best friend! Am I really your boyfriend??” Jun questioned and pain shot to his whole body. Ohno was immobilized for a few seconds, too long for Jun’s comfort that he stood and left without a word.

you kept talking about is your best friend, Satoshi-kun. In all our dates, nothing comes out from you but your best friend!

Ohno realized how special Nino was to him after all these years they’ve been together. He was there when he needed him the most. Even though he could have, he didn’t quit being his manager and always stayed by his side. He even sacrificed his vacations just so he could fully take care of Ohno.

Just what kind of a friend was he?! To prioritize his newly found lover instead of his very best friend who stood by him.

He dashed out from the restaurant and went back to his home. Then, he called for Sho and asked for all of his appointments for tomorrow to be rescheduled. He already set his mind. He’d find his best friend tomorrow no matter what.

*

Nino woke up to a peaceful morning. He silently ate breakfast with his sister, since their mom was out buying groceries. Then he decided to play some of his games in his room and tidy it up a bit to keep himself busy the rest of the day. His sister was down stairs, cleaning the room.

Around noon, he heard the sound of a car parking in front of the house. Nino peeked from his window and saw Ohno coming out from a taxi. He quickly closed the window and dashed downstairs to his sister.

“What’s going on?”

“Oh-chan’s here! Nee-chan, I still don’t want to face him yet. Tell me I’m not home, please?” Nino pleaded. His sister quickly understood his predicament and promised to tell Ohno he was not at home.

“Thanks, nee-chan.” Nino hugged his sister tight before hearing a knock on the door. He quickly went back up inside and locked his bedroom door.

*

Nino’s sister was the one who answered the door.

“Oh, Ohno-kun! What a pleasant surprise. What brings you here all of a sudden?”

“Is Nino there?”

“Yes, he is! He just arrived yesterday.” Someone answered for him, it was Nino’s mom.

“Mom!” Nino’s sister whined at the wrong timing.

“Can I please see him?” Ohno pleaded with them.

“Sure, why not?” Nino’s mom answered with a smile, “Oh, and can you help me with these?”

*

A knock, then “Kazu, sorry but I did my best. Mom arrived at the wrong time and agreed when he asked if he could meet you. Should I let him?” Nino sighed, he knew he had to face this sooner or later, he just didn’t know it would be so soon. He unlocked the door and faced his sister.

“It’s okay. Thanks, nee-chan.”

“You can do it, okay?” His sister encouraged him and went down to fetch Ohno.

Nino closed the door again and went to his bed, covering his body with a blanket and nervously waited as he heard footsteps coming closer.

*

“Nino?” Ohno called, knocking softly on the door. No response. He tried the knob and it opened swiftly. He saw Nino hiding in his bed.

“Nino, can you first let me explain?” Ohno softly asked, sitting by the side of the bed near Nino’s face. He can now clearly see that Nino was crying.

“Don’t want to. Not after what happened.”

“I’m so sorry, Nino. I should’ve followed you, I should’ve told you about-“ He was cut off by Nino’s sobs.

“I would’ve let it pass if it was other trivial things, Oh-chan. I would’ve because I’m your friend. But that, you secretly having a lover without telling me, it really hurt my feelings. I’m your friend but I had to go and find out myself to know about it.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you ab-“

“Still ignorant, aren’t you? Can’t you see it? I’m in love with you Oh-chan! And not just any friendly love, I love love you, okay?!” Nino’s sobs got louder but it didn’t stop Ohno from hearing what Nino told him.

Nino loves me?

Without waiting for anymore words, Ohno got on the bed and hugged Nino no matter how awkward their position was.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“Are you really that ignorant? People might know which may lead to a scandal, idiot!” Nino retorted, still sobbing but it was the bratty tone in it that made Ohno relieved.

“We’ll find a way for that.”

*

They found themselves laying side by side on Nino’s bed that night. Cuddling each other.

“Thank you for bearing with an ignorant, day dreaming idiot like me for the past 6 years.” Ohno whispered at Nino. They were on their sides, facing each other. Nino wasn’t able to reply, but Ohno could see that he had blushed which made him smile. He couldn’t think of any other means to tell Nino that he had the same feelings so he decided to give Nino a kiss.

Not those good morning kisses nor the calm-down-kiss but a genuine, passionate kiss.

“I love you, Ninomiya Kazunari. I hope I said it clearly enough so you won’t misunderstand it okay?” Nino kicked him lightly, hiding his face in embarrassment. Ohno cupped his face and made him look at him instead.

“So?”

“So what?”

“Should I kiss you again before you tell -“

“Fine, I love you too Ohno Satoshi even though you’re still an ignorant day dreaming idiot.” Ohno had to chuckle at that though it didn’t stop him from giving Nino another kiss.
