About fifteen minutes into Moon (watched on DVD last night), my very bright and very cute wife said, “This better not be Solaris.” Through one of those social situations you sometimes can’t avoid, we’d gotten roped into seeing that George Clooney crapfest at the theater a few years ago, and ever since it’s been our yardstick for boring, artsy-fartsy navel-gazing cinematic flotsam. Well, Moon wasn’t quite that bad, but despite bravura performances from Sam Rockwell, it’s not particularly good; this movie takes itself way too seriously, and lacks any kind of dramatic punch, despite some interesting elements. Kevin Spacey is fun as the HAL-esque computer, though.
