Happy Anniversary to me --20 YEARS

I was just making a comment about this, when I realized it...

Today marks 20 YEARS since I first set foot on Beloit College campus as a freshman [yes, that's what we were called then, back in the Olden Days].

I signed up for the French track in our 2 week Orientation Language Program. You were supposed to pick a language you had never studied, and now I wish I had picked Hebrew or Greek. But at the time, I was exhausted from flying back from my internship at the Smithsonian and saying goodbye to the other interns, as well as completely disoriented from recent life upheavals. I needed something easy and familiar. So French was it.

One week late,r I was at the French House for our instructor's crepe-making demonstration. A reporter and photographer from the Beloit Daily News showed up, and I got my picture in the local paper. In my first week! I still have the clipping too.

And now... now I sit here at work, in a job that did not even exist back then, knowing more about archaeology and ancient religious texts than I ever conceived possible, and I am working with a realtor, a mortgage broker, a contractor, and am buying new carpet. Back then, I did not even know how to drive a car. It never crossed my mind I would be a homeowner, or sit on a computer all day. Credit scores were unheard of. I think I had used a computer a total of 5 times in my life. I had never been in love.

hee.
