Summary: A knight in shining armor always saves the princess. Or at least he tries XD
Notes: For joyeuxnoel, I probably outted myself writing this, but it was fun so who cares XD I hope you enjoy it!! This is the first time I’m writing Sakamoto and Nagano so I hope I didn’t botch them too much.
Also, no spiders were hurt in the making of this fanfic.

“Are you sure this was a good idea?”

“I will prove Nagano I’m not a coward!” Sakamoto Masayuki said with much indignation, waving his fist for emphasis.

“You could have just apologized and kiss and make up,” Okada Junichi remarked dryly.

“You’ll see! I’ll show everyone I have what it takes to save a princess and be a hero!”

“Right, and remind me why I had to come with you?”

“Because,” Sakamoto started with no little amusement in his voice, “ you owe my wif-err Nagano for saving you from Ken and Go that one time they tried po-“

“There’s a spider in your hair,” Okada cut in before that embarrassment could be discussed again, and promptly plugged his ears at the shrill scream coming from the other man.

He didn’t bother to hide his manic grin as Sakamoto pouted and climbed back on the horse.

“This castle looks abandoned,” Okada looked around with slight suspicion. “And there was no dragon like King Johnny said there would be.”

Sakamoto, however, was striding confidently up the stairs and with a flourish move, shoved the door open.

“Princess, I have come to rescue you!”

Okada, trailing behind, rolled his eyes.

“Eh? There’s no one here,” Sakamoto blinked at the empty room. “PRINCESS!! WHERE ARE YOU?!” he shouted to the empty room and turned to look in the closet.

“Someone left a note,” Okada told him, picking up the sheet of paper from the bedside table.

“Dear Knight in Shining Armor,
I got bored waiting. And to be honest, I’m too young and pretty to be wasting here.
So, I decided to rescue myself.
Thanks for coming all the way here and have a good day,
Princess Tegoshi Yuya Yuko
p.s.
If you don’t mind, please water my plants. I like my flowers but it would have been impractical to take them with me.”

Okada tilted his head at the paper in his hand, contemplating for a moment, and then shrugged.

“Well, I guess that’s it. What do you want to do no-“ he looked around for Sakamoto and had to stop. “What are you doing?!”

Sakamoto blinked from where he was filling a bright yellow watering can.

“Watering the plants.”

“Look at all these people,” Sakamoto sounded impressed as they entered the main square, where many knights and adventure seekers gathered to hear the urgent message from the King. They were in the next kingdom and things were looking promising.

“I still don’t understand why we have to try this nonsense again,” Okada grumbled under his breath. He was about to add something, when the royal herald appeared.

“Gentlemen! This morning, our dear prince Koichi has been kidnapped! King Johnny offers a sizeable prize to whoever brings the prince back home, safe and sound. The prince was last seen-“

“Well, this shouldn’t be too difficult,” Sakamoto smiled down at Okada, who was looking mildly interested.

It had taken them several long hour of retracing the prince’s steps, asking shop owners and showing the prince’s portrait to travelers, when Okada noticed something was not right.

“Didn’t we go through here an hour ago?” he asked as they were approaching a crossroad.

“I don’t think so.”

“I think we did,” Okada frowned. “We were coming from the other direction. In fact, now that I think about it, we’ve been walking in circles half the time.”

“The kidnappers are trying to confuse us, to throw us off the track,” Sakamoto said with much conviction.

Okada didn’t look convinced.

Half an hour later, Sakamoto snickered in triumph when they noticed two men walking towards them, one of them very familiar. They dismounted their horses and Sakamoto drew his sword.

“Release the prince, you vile criminal!”

Both men stopped and blinked at Sakamoto with obvious confusion.

“Excuse me?” said the one that was not the prince. He was dressed as a mage, except for his hat that looked like a cross between a bird and a squirrel.

“Don’t worry, prince!” Sakamoto waved his sword and Okada ducked just in time to avoid injury. “I’m here to save you!”

“Eh?” the prince tilted his head. “From what?”

“Your kidnapper, of course!” Sakamoto pointed an accusing finger at the mage.

“My… what?!” the prince looked at the mage, who looked right back at him and shrugged.

Okada, silent until that moment, decided he was hungry and it was time to get things done.

“Were you not kidnapped this morning, prince Koichi? The king has offered a prize for your safe return,” Okada narrowed his eyes at the mage. “You don’t look like a kidnapper.”

“That would be because I’m not,” the man who was not the prince said with a flat tone that suggested the mere thought was too stupid to consider. “I am the royal mage.”

“Why would you kidnap the prince?!” Sakamoto looked appalled.

“I wouldn’t,” the mage frowned and turned to his prince. “Koichi! This is all because you got us lost! I swear this is the last time I’m letting you pick our morning walk trail!”

“I didn’t get us lost,” the prince protested. “I just… wasn’t looking where we were going,” he finished with a miffed pout. “Besides, not like you were paying much attention either, Tsuyoshi.”

The royal mage blushed and crossed his arms on his chest.

“At least I know how to get us back to the castle.” He sighed and turned to the other two. “I’m sorry we caused so much trouble. You don’t to bother yourselves anymore; I’ll take care of this mess. If I’d known there was such a commotion, I’d have gotten us back home earlier.”

Okada, not quick to liking people, found himself smiling at the mage’s honest words. This guy was OK.

“Do you want a ride?”

The mage smiled at him and shook his head.

“Thank you, but that won’t be necessary. Magic will do the trick much faster. Thank you for letting us know about this stupidity.”

And with that he put his arm around the prince’s waist and threw some powder in the air. Okada managed to see the prince blushing, before the two disappeared in a cloud of purple smoke.

“I’m hungry. I saw an inn back there, lets go grab dinner,” Okada turned to mount his horse, completely ignoring the way Sakamoto was standing there, still with his sword drawn and disappointment written all over his face.

* * *

“Hey, Hiroshi!”

Nagano Hiroshi turned from his gardening work to look at the man coming up the trail.

“Mabo! How’s things going in the shop?”

“Good, good. Thanks for asking. Listen, when’s Sakamoto coming back? I loaned him my sleeping bag and a friend asked if he could borrow it.”

“Is Nakai trying to impress another young squire into service?” Nagano dusted his hands and tilted his straw hat.

“Yeah, ever since that Sho guy got his new squire, what was his name again? Aida? Aiba? Anyway, Nakai has been ranting about it for weeks. He thinks he found a new candidate so he wants to go, and I quote, out to the wilderness to show his squire how real men practice.”

Nagano quirked a brow and Mabo shrugged.

“Hey, not my idea.”

“I told Okada to bring our knight in shining armor back in two weeks so they should be here next weekend,” Nagano picked up his basket of flowers and turned towards the small house he was sharing with one knight in kind-of-shining armor. “Would you like some apple pie? I baked some this morning.”

* * *

Different kingdom, same ordeal Okada thought as the royal herald came out to deliver the latest quest.

“Gentlemen! The evil witch from the west had angered King Johnny and taken our belove-“

“You hear that, Okada! A witch! I’ve never fought a witch before,” Sakamoto sounded either excited or terrified. Sometimes it was hard to say.

“You’re being too loud; I can’t hear what he’s saying. Anyway, I think we should sit this one out.”

“Nonsense! A knight never backs out of a challenge!”

The herald was just giving the final details, promising the usual prizes and fame.

“Looks like it’s going to be a difficult one. Some of the people are already giving up,” Sakamoto motioned around them. Half the people were leaving the main square, shaking their heads and looking disappointed.

Okada narrowed his eyes and frowned.

“Somehow, this doesn’t feel right.”

A day and a half later, they were climbing up the stairs to the witch’s tower. They were climbing a lot of stairs lately, Okada mused as they slowly pushed the door open.

The room inside was cluttered with books and jars and something on the stove smelled like chicken soup. The man sitting by the window rushed towards them with a wide grin.

“Are you here to save me?”

“Are you the prince the witch had kidnapped?” Okada sounded skeptic. The man wasn’t dressed as a prince. More like a hobo.

“Prince?! Yasu-I-mean-the witch hadn’t kidnapped any prince. I’m the royal jester…” the man looked slightly puzzled.

“The witch obviously cast a spell on him, poor boy doesn’t remember who he is,” Sakamoto smiled gently at the jester. “Do you remember your name, highness?”

“My name is Yoko,” the jester looked from Sakamoto to Okada and back again. “And I’m really not a prince, I’m the royal jester. The witch kidnapped me to entertain him.”

“Him??” Okada blinked and just as he was about to say more, the witch bounced in.

If the jester was looking like a hobo, the witch was looking like a jester, all bright colors and mismatching socks.

“Visitors?” he looked from one knight to the other.

“Mistaken identity,” Okada apologized and dragged a protesting Sakamoto out the door.

“WAIT, WHAT ABOUT SAVING ME!?!”

* * *

They were walking through a forest and it was getting dark.

“Listen, why don’t we just go home? It’s been almost two weeks and I kind of need to get back to the shop. I promised Tsubasa I’ll build him a new caravan for his theater troupe.” Okada ducked under another branch and glared at the leaf stuck to his sleeve.

“We can’t! Not until I save someone from something!” Sakamoto sounded more desperate than determined.

“Don’t you miss your bed? Nagano’s beef stew? Don’t you want to be clean of the dirt and mud? Away from the wild animals and the cold nights?” Okada was purposefully lowering his voice towards the end, sounding more and more menacing.

“A knight is not bothered by such mild inconveniences,” Sakamoto huffed, though his voice was strained around the edges. “A knight fears nothing and can survive anywhere with-“

“There’s a spider in your hair.”

“I’m not falling for that one again,” Sakamoto said with shaky annoyance.

“I’m not joking,” Okada said quietly, brow arching at the disbelieving look on his friend’s face.

“There is nothing in my hair!” Sakamoto said and raised his hand to his hair. “See! Noth-“

Okada promptly plugged his ears at the shrill scream and didn’t bother to hide his manic grin.

THE END

Omake:

“I’m sure you did your best,” Nagano said with a gentle smile.

“Of course I did! A knight never does any less,” Sakamoto announced, but he was looking at his house-mate like a kicked puppy.

Nagano patted his arm and stirred him towards the bath, hot water and fragrant soap already waiting by the fire.

“I’ll go get you some clean clothes and we’ll have dinner after you’re done,” Nagano smiled as he crossed the room. “And tomorrow, you can fix the roof.”

Sakamoto blenched.

“The-the roof…?” he mumbled weakly, reminded of what started the whole running-around-trying-to-rescue-people thing.

“I’m sure you can handle it,” Nagano smiled with triumph. “After all, you’ve proven you’re a brave knight.”
