„2015“, Shingo thinks. „It’s been 10 years now.“ He wonders what happened during the last years. They were always close and still are, but time made them different. He sips on his coffee which is already cold. It’s unusual for Shingo. He’s not often distracted. But today, he can’t stop thinking. His thoughts are running in circles, and he isn’t able to think about something different.
“What are you thinking about?” it’s Kimura asking him. Shingo feels the other’s look on him. It disturbs him today. He feels a little caught, and that’s what he totally does not like.
“Nothing in particular,” he finally answers. Of course this was a lie, but he wants no discussion, especially not with Kimura. He knows how this would end. Even though Shingo is over 30 now, he’s still the baby of SMAP. Not often though, but sometimes, and for Kimura, he’ll always be little Shingo. Mostly, Shingo likes to be comforted and he likes to have the leeway to be bratty and to get on his friends’ nerves a little.
“Nothing, hm?” Kimura starts. “I somehow do not believe you.” he smiles a little at Shingo. “I know you pretty well and there is something bothering you.” he added.
“I was just thinking about the old times and how all of us have changed.” Shingo answers. It’s not a lie in the end. He was thinking about the past, but only about his past and one special memory.
Kimura nods at him, a smile curling around his lips. Shingo hates it that the other always seemed to know what he was thinking. “You know, it’s never too late to fix things. Take a look at me.” Kimura looks at their band mates. He knows it, Shingo thinks.
“Yeah,” Shingo only answers. “I should have fixed it years ago.” he thinks silently.
2005 - Spring
Shingo breathed in deeply. He needed to calm himself down. He wasn’t exactly a shy character, but in some situations, he wasn’t the strong, powerful man he wanted to be. “Goro-chan,” he started. The other turned to face him. Shingo could feel his cheeks blushing. He hated himself right now.
“Yes?” the other said. Goro looked at him with his big, mother-like eyes which Shingo loved so much, but he’d never admit that he did. At least not now.
“How about going on a date?” Shingo blurted out. The others looked at him. Now he was much more embarrassed, which was totally unusual for him.
“Sure,” Goro answered with a smile around his lips, like he’s been waiting for a confession or an invitation like this.
Shingo could feel his heart hammering in his chest. Kimura smiled at him brightly when he crossed the bench he was sitting on. “If you say anything now, I swear I will talk about your perfect butt for a whole month. And I won’t talk about anything else.” Shingo grumbled.
“It’s okay.” Kimura said, but Shingo knew that Kimura would tease him for the next weeks.
His smile specially lets Shingo tilt his head a little. “Was the situation really that funny?”
“You were totally like a five year old who wants to have an ice cream. But I guess it’s okay. It was sweet. It’s just that I never thought that my Shingo-brat can be sweet.” Kimura tousled Shingo’s hair even though he knew Shingo hated it.
In the end, Shingo had to smile too. Of course he knew he acted like a lovey-dove and actually, it was what he hated about others, but he couldn’t change it now.
He was always bad in telling others about his feelings - especially romantic feelings.
2005 - Summer
Shingo grumbled something into his pillow when the other opened the curtains. “Time to wake up.” he heard the other saying.
“Too early,” Shingo turned in his bed. It was a hot night, not only because of the heat, but also because of them doing not-so-g-rated-things. He kicked the blanket from his body and stretched. “More sleep,” he yawned, earning an amused sigh from the other.
“It’s 8 o’clock in the morning, it’s time to get up.” Goro said. He had his hands crossed in front of his body, his head tilted and a grin curling around his lips.
“8 o’clock? Are you nuts Goro-chan? It’s our day off, I don’t get up before lunchtime.” Shingo pouted half-heartedly. “So get back to bed,” Shingo angled with his feet to get them around Goro’s body and pulled him back to bed.
“You really are something.” Goro laughed and lay next to the other. They had their fingers intertwined and Shingo felt the other’s thumb brushing over his palm. He felt a warm feeling spreading throughout his body. He wished he could stay like this forever.
2005 - Autumn
I’ll be back at around 4pm, Shingo typed on his phone. It was a busy time. They were almost done with tour, but he had a lot to do with drama filming and TV shows. Goro on the other hand was somewhere outside Tokyo for days for the filming of a special variety show he’d be in. Today, he wanted to come home to see Shingo again.
They phoned each other often, but they last saw each other two weeks ago. It was like living next to each other but not with each other. Shingo sighed. Of course it was because of their stressful time, and it would become different again. But how long would they be able to go on like this? Shingo looked at his calendar. Everything was coloured red -there wouldn’t be a weekend off till Christmas.
I won’t make it, filming got delayed. Shingo deleted the message immediately. Somehow, he had the feeling that they wouldn’t meet this weekend. He put his hands in his pockets. It started getting colder already. Or maybe it was just the feeling in him that’s making him shiver. He shook his head. He had no idea how this would end, but the feeling in his chest didn’t tell him anything positive.
2005 - Winter
“I’m going now.” Goro said with a thin and sad voice. Shingo just nodded at him. He couldn’t say anything further. He couldn’t go on like this. It was just not possible.
You never have time for me, and you always find an excuse to get out of my way, Shingo told the other one day ago. He could understand that Goro was hurt and he knew there would be another discussion about it, but it didn’t come. Goro took his things and told Shingo that he’d leave the apartment they shared. “It’s the best for the both of us.” he only said.
On one hand, Shingo felt relieved, but on the other, he wanted to hold his friend back. He didn’t want to end it, even though it was probably the best for them.
They didn’t have a fight and it’s not because they don’t like each other anymore. It’s just that it didn’t fit anymore. They drifted away from each other step by step. And for now, they didn’t even have anything they could talk about.
Something in Shingo’s chest clenched. He hated the situation now, but he knew that he won’t be able to change anything by holding the other back.
Maybe there’d be a time for them, but not now.
2015 - Present
“And you really don’t want to try it again?” Tsuyoshi wants to know. Shingo brushes over his chin thoughtfully. Of course he wants, but he doesn’t know how and if it’s a good idea to refresh old feelings.
“I have no idea. You tell me.” Shingo said, a little smile around his lips.
Tsuyoshi knits his eyebrows. “I shall tell you what you shall do?” He breathed out. “No way.” he adds.
“I know.” Shingo sighs. He knows that this is the job he has to do. Ten years have passed since they were together, but for Shingo, it feels like it has only been a year - maximum. His feelings feel fresh, like he never stopped feeling more than friendship for the other. Was there a time he didn’t think of getting Goro back? There must have been, because otherwise, Shingo would have done something much earlier. Maybe they needed the time.
Shingo smiles. 10 years to get back together? That’s a long time, he thinks. But it’s never too late, that’s what Kimura said earlier.
Shingo walks up to the other. His heart is beating faster, just like how it did back then. “Hey, Goro-chan,” he starts with a grin.
“Yes?” the other seems surprised, but maybe he already knows what’s coming next because when Shingo asks him for a date, he just smiles and agrees to go out with him.
