A few months ago, we got a used G5 iMac. It had some relatively minor video issues where sometimes it would corrupt parts of the display. It was annoying, but not unbearable. Since the machine still had a few months of AppleCare left on it, I figured it was worth the effort to try to get it fixed.
I took it in to the local Apple retail store, who happily replaced the logic board. We got it back a few days later, and a week or so later, the problem happened again. I took it back to the store, they replaced the system board again, and additionally the fan controller. We got it back, and it continued having video distortion, this time worse than before. Plus, now the built in iSight didn't work. Back to the store for repair #3. Once again they replaced the system board, and this time also replaced the LCD panel. Once again, the problem came back after a week.
By now, AppleCare expired, and they were only continuing to fix it because it was a continuation of a pre-existing problem. I went in to the store today ready to argue for a replacement machine, or at least a nice credit towards a new machine. Without even having to ask, the Genius bar guy offered me a brand new iMac.
I opted to pay for AppleCare on this one. I figure the machine was free, I can pay for the $130 for AppleCare, and it may get me another new machine in 3 years :-).
Also this weekend, we had a server crash hard at work. Sun E2900 or something. Of course, it's out of the Sun warranty, but we have a service contract with a 3rd party vendor for it. They came out this morning and replaced the system board. Various people worked and got it back up around noon. Sometime shortly before 1pm it started throwing lots of memory errors, then around 6pm it crashed hard.
I doubt we will get a new server for free from Sun, though.
