"Why's the Duke holding Prince Taisuke captive anyway?" The youngest member of the troupe paused in restringing his bow, looking around the campsite.

"Because he wants to have royal babies, so he can claim the throne," Kawai responded.

Senga nodded, and then frowned. "But… they're both boys."

"Yeah," Nika chimed in, "how is that even possible?"

Kawai grinned. "The royal family isn't really human," he said. "They don't give birth like normal people. They lay eggs."

Sitting close by, Goseki caught Yokoo's warning glare in time and threw a clod of earth at Kawai's face. "Fumito, cut it out. Stop lying to the children."

Miyata hadn't intended to enter the Palace grounds. In the present political climate it was the least sensible place for him to be, but the child had looked at him with such pitiful eyes and explained that his ball should only be on the other side of the wall, it was just that I'm too short to climb over… Miyata was powerless to resist.

When he landed on the other side of the outer wall and found himself face to face with Prince Yuta, Miyata knew he was done for. Not dead - there were no soldiers - but doomed nonetheless.

"We have to rescue him." Miyata's face was pinched with determination. "All this time we've thought 'they're pawns in King Kazuya and the Duke Akanishi's politics, poor princes' but we never stopped to think about them."

"You're seriously suggesting we kidnap a prince with so much tension in the kingdom? …There'll be civil war." Yokoo's hands stilled, whetstone and blade lowering.

"You've heard the Duke's calling himself 'Jin the Benevolent' now?" Goseki added. "That's just one step from 'King Jin'."

"If you're convinced this is the right thing to do," Kitayama cut in, silencing the others, "we'll need volunteers for a reconnaissance mission."

:IV:

"Oh," said Hashimoto, "hi! Are you the guys Tama said were gonna rescue him?"

"Uhm." Tsukada froze in place, glancing around the store room with wide eyes. It was two in the morning; nobody in their right mind should be here.

"Prince Yuta told you that, did he?" Totsuka stepped forward, giving Kawai and Tsukada a chance to secure the area. "You're Prince Ryosuke then, I take it."

"Yes," Hashimoto nodded. "To both. Tama said he wouldn't let me be rescued if I brought Balcan 3000, though." He held up the wooden toy dog on wheels. "You will let me bring him, right?"

"What do you mean, 'not tonight, this was just for recon'?" Fujigaya was already dressed for travel, in riding gear that was supposed to look 'rustic' but which still managed to scream 'riches'. "I already drugged the guards and everything!" Kawai knew he wasn't supposed to laugh at royalty but the way the prince was trying not to sulk was pretty funny.

Never mind that they'd only bargained for abducting Tamamori, much less all three princes.

"And Tama was really so looking forward to seeing his outlaw again," Fujigaya sighed, flopping onto his four-poster bed.

"Shut up," Tamamori responded, cheeks turning pink.

:VI:

On the whole, they responded rather well to the unexpected arrival of three members of the royal family. King Kazuya was respected throughout the kingdom even three years after his departure, and Nikaido and Senga watched with amusement as Yokoo tried to subtly tidy the camp while Kawai and Kitayama took the princes on a tour.

"D'you think we'll end up dead, since we kidnapped them?" Nikaido handed an arrow shaft over for Senga to fletch, and picked up another.

"Dunno," Senga shrugged, slicing feathers with a sharp knife. "I guess if we're together it'll be okay."

"Don't be dumb," said Nikaido.

:VII:

"You really had no idea things were this bad?" Kitayama asked, his surprise evident.

"No!" Fujigaya snapped, clearly uncomfortable. "You seem to forget I've been locked in the castle for the last three years. It's kind of difficult to stay well-informed."

"We did the best we could…" Tamamori's voice was muffled by the ragged scarf wrapped around his head and shoulders.

Kitayama nodded. "I'm sorry," he said. "I know you hate the way things are right now, too."

"They're really dying of starvation?" Fujigaya looked down at his hands, as though food would appear in them to give out free. "This has to change."
