Gene Nichol resigned today as President of the College of William and Mary. The Board of Visitors decided not to renew Nichol's contract for another term, thus Nichol decided to resign immediately.
My sister (goes to WM) said three out of her four classes were canceled today, and that her teachers are refusing to teach until this matter is settled.
I've been sending this around to a lot of my non-WM friends (typically with the subject "Look how ridiculous my alma mater is"), but these are my two favorite links:
Firing him makes sense, a rare moment of sanity in academia. I fail to see how this would create a situation that would necessitate not teaching classes. My guess would be teachers too well recalling how refusing to learn affected university politics in the 60s, but that is just a guess.
