“News is what people want to keep hidden and everything else is publicity”

Below is a transcript from an address by Bill Moyers that I just can’t get enough of Bill Moyers' speech to the National Conference for Media Reform

You don’t even have to read it, you can listen to it or watch the video. You should take the time to check it out. It’s probably one of the better speeches I’ve heard a in long time

For those not familiar with Bill Moyers he is one of America’s finest most credible broadcast journalists with over 30 Emmies to his credit as well as other numerous awards and accolades. He was the creator and former host of Now w/ Bill Moyer for PBS and has been viciously attacked for his journalistic integrity by Kenneth Tomlinson ,the Chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting who is on a constant crusade to ensure there is no more critical debate on the issues. So he must be doing something right, just not rightwing…

It is rife with great quotes:

On free press:
“A free press is one where it’s okay to state the conclusion you’re led to by the evidence.”

On the climate of media today:
“We’re seeing unfold a contemporary example of the age old ambition of power and ideology to squelch -- to punish the journalist who tell the stories that make princes and priests uncomfortable.”

On little flag pins:
“The flag’s been hijacked and turned into a logo, the trademark - the trademark of a monopoly on patriotism.”

I could go on and on... But I think it better if you hear it for yourself. If you are even the least bit concerned about the state of the media today as well as the future of PBS take a moment and listen. In a world dominated by sound bites and lazy news organizations passing government VNRs as truth, Bill Moyers is the last great defender of critical investigative journalism.
