Okay, I'm going to assume that anyone reading this has read the book. If not, stop reading now.
Okay, I'll try to be spoiler-free here, but everytime I do that, someone points out that I've revealed too much, so you've been warned.
The opening was great, as it covered the history of the alternate 1985 visually, instead of having characters mention it constantly. That let the characters serve the story and not the premise. Penny and I both agree that Silhouette was gorgeous, and her scene in the opening credits while a bit much, firmly established that it was her death we were seeing when we did. Dealy Plaza was a treat, but it cost us Hollis Mason's retirement party flashback.
The tone was great, and carried through the film completely. although I would have appreciated a little more color. From production videos, I know that effort was made to stick to original color pallet, I just wish that it had showed, in a place other than Adrian's purple jacket, which stuck out like a sore thumb. All in all, though, I was pleased.
Everybody is talking about the penis and the sex scenes. I was pleased to see that "you're my thrill" was in the soundtrack, but I'll be damned if I can remember where it was. They were what they were, and served the story, but man, that penis got distracting. Did it have to be so big?
Was I concerned about the violence? Nope. I remember the mugging scene as being bloody and excessively viiolent. Sawed off arms? Hey, it made more sense than what was depicted in the comic. What concerned me more what was left out, and that was the element of humanity that gave the reader the connection to all of the people killed in New York. We saw the newsstand guy try to shield the kid, but they never had a voice, so our connection was lost. I really liked the book's inclusion of the prison psychiatrist's troubled marriage. It added the element of Rorschach's attitude affecting the people around him, and without it, Dan's argument was about Rorschach affecting Dan, instead of the people that have normal lives being affected by the people in masks. Had it been included we'd be looking at a four hour movie instead of a three hour movie.
The "you're locked in here with me" line was better when delivered directly by Rorschach. Good change there.
I hated what was changed. I can't say more without spoiling it, so I'll let that hang in the room. There was a major change and it left too many holes. It led to further changes and that kind of ruined the ending for me. Still, I got a great film translation of a comic, and one I definitely will purchase on DVD when it's out.
I loved the movie and it was the best translation to screen that we could have possibly asked for.
