Original story: Leaving by the4_seasons

Kurosaki is tired. He's tired of running, tired of chasing, tired of playing the game. It's that bone-deep exhaustion that no amount of sleep can cure. Not that he can sleep much anyway.

Tomorrow he will go and he will make sure that another crook will be put behind bars. And then he'll be done. That's it. No more.

He slips inside Tsurara's house unnoticed and stands in the doorway watching her for a long time. She's too busy going over some paperwork and hasn't seen him yet, and he savours this moment where he can just observe and not have to put up a stone-cold façade. It's not often that he has this chance.

Then she turns around and pins him in his spot with her gaze. (Like a dead, beautiful butterfly on a collector's display.) He's not sure what she thinks she sees written all over his face, but he knows that she's got it wrong. He's just tired. That's all.

When Tsurara gets up to walk over to him, all he sees is her, all he feels is her. And when her mouth finally covers his, nothing else seems to matter, if only for a short, short time. She somehow makes it all a little bit better. Every single time. Kurosaki can never understand this weird sort of magic Tsurara possesses.

After Kurosaki is arrested, they give him a trial. Of course they do. It's the right, just thing to do after all. It's all only for show, though, only to keep up appearances. They all know that Kurosaki is guilty as all hell.

He half expects to see Tsurara sitting across from him at the prosecutor's bench, but what he gets is some harassed-looking, middle aged man in a stiff suit, who doesn't give a fuck and just wants to get the whole thing over with so that he can move on to his next case.

Kurosaki looks for Tsurara in the small crowd of people who have come to see him being put away, but he doesn't see her. She's not there.

Tsurara doesn't come to his judgment day.

Freedom. The word has never meant much to Kurosaki. He hasn't been free in years.

When you are in prison time passes differently then it does in the outside world, Kurosaki learns. Sometimes it jumps from one event to the other and you have no idea what happened in-between. And sometimes it drags on and on, endlessly, like crystallized honey and you just can't get away from it fast enough.

Tsurara comes to visit him once and she fidgets and bites the corner of her lip the whole time she's there. She's a fine mixture of anxiety and despair and Kurosaki doesn't want to see any of it.

She sits on the other side of the huge, imposing bolted down table and talks about current affairs, about her life, about everything and nothing but never asks how Kurosaki is doing.

The time allowed for the visit is already over and the guard comes in to take Kurosaki back to his cell, when Tsurara's hand shoots out and grabs hold of his wrist. Her skin feels clammy and her eyes look wide and sincere when she glances up at him.

"How are you?" Her voice is barely more than a whisper.

"I'm fine. Fine."

It's as good an answer as any Tsurara could hope for.

Kurosaki is released from prison on good behaviour quite a few years before his time is actually up. He almost laughs at this. Almost.

It's only once he's outside of those four grey walls that he really understands just how much he's been missing. For a long, long time he just stands in the middle of a deserted back street and just breathes. He breathes in the air, the smells, the feel of it all. He really has missed it.

But now that he's out, Kurosaki has no idea what he should do. There's no plan, nowhere that he has to be, nothing that needs to be done. Yes, he needs to find a place to sleep and yes, he should probably think about getting a real job once he settles down, but none of it is urgent to him. Kurosaki doesn't actually need all that much as far as material things go.

He doesn't go to see Tsurara straight away either. It's not that he doesn't want to face her or that he's afraid of what her reaction to him showing up on her doorstep might be. He needs to take his time with this. Needs to be certain.

In the end, it's her that finds him, not the other way around. It's the way it always has been between the two of them and neither of them minds.

"How are you?" she asks.

"I'm fine," he says as he takes a step toward her and for once in his life he actually means it.
