The ringtone was horribly shrill; an electronic shock against the panting and the slap of skin against skin. He felt the lithe body still beneath him and he did the same, sighing as Hyde picked up the cellphone and slumped back against the mattress.

“Don’t answer,” Gackt said; half-command, half-plea.

“It’s her,” Hyde responded hoarsely, voice strained from the cries of pleasure uttered moments before.

“Don’t,” Gackt repeated, leaning down to lick Hyde’s collarbone and nuzzle at his neck, an attempted distraction. “She doesn’t need you like I do.”

“She’s my wife,” Hyde reminded him unnecessarily, clutching the cellphone tightly in one hand, wracked with indecision.

“…Does that make me… nothing?” Gackt pulled away, hating this constant fight for attention.

“Gacchan. Don’t say that…” Hyde looked up from the flashing screen of the ringing cellphone, eyes hurt. “You know I-”

The ringing stopped. Hyde looked down at the screen guiltily: 1 missed call. His tongue darted out to wet dried lips as he glanced up at his lover’s expressionless face: trying to seem indifferent, but failing.

“Gackt,” Hyde began, “don’t you see? I do… I do love you, but… I’m tied.”

“I guess those wings on your back don’t give you the freedom you wanted, after all,” Gackt muttered, almost to himself. “I understand.”

The phone rang again. Hyde’s hand automatically moved to flip it open, connecting the call. Warily, he raised the phone to his ear. “Voicemail,” he said, barely able to disguise the relief in his voice.

From a few feet away, Gackt could make out Megumi’s voice, tinny and distorted through the phone.

“Haido. I was hoping to talk to you before you arrived at his place. Guess I was too late.” A pause; a sigh. “Look. Come home tomorrow. We can talk better then. Stay with him tonight. I… love you.”

As Hyde snapped the phone shut and reached out for his pants, Gackt leaned across and grasped his wrist. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I need to get back,” Hyde said, eyes unseeing.

“I heard what she said,” Gackt’s voice was quiet. “Hyde…”

“Then don’t you see? She wants me back there.” Hyde scrubbed a fist into one eye, frowning and unhappy.

“Hyde!” Gackt grabbed the shorter man by the shoulders and turned him about, so they were face to face. “If you go back… what then? An ultimatum? Promises to be faithful made behind my back? At least… stay here tonight… with me.”

As Hyde slumped into the taller man’s embrace, the cellphone clattered to the floor.

gackt, hyde
