Look, she isn't supposed to be the hero of this story. She's supposed to be the supporting player, the one who makes sure no one gets killed while Damon and Elena do the heavy lifting; she isn't supposed to have to face the monster wearing her best friend's face.
Elena doesn't get it; Caroline isn't sure if it's because Damon didn't explain it or didn't explain it right but Elena doesn't understand how not killing people takes actual work. Killing is what's natural; not killing is the unnatural state of being.
Stefan taught her that.
But now she's standing in a darkened hallway with a blood-smeared mouth Stefan standing in front of her, and Caroline knows this is it; either she says something which lets her glimpse the Stefan she loves or she lets him go with the creature who ruins everything.
"No matter how good it feels to give yourself over to it, you fight it," she blurts out, remembering the words he said to her months earlier when her own face was coated with blood, when her world was imploding. Caroline sees the

Haven't seen season 3 yet but have been relatively spoiled. Even if I hadn't this fic is just amazing. My fave line was the one about Stefan saying her name like a prayer and a thousand other things she's too young to understand. PROPS!!
