No Ordinary Blog Post

So, the series premier of No Ordinary Family was tonight. I watched it after watching Glee, even though I had already watched it online.

This show is about a normal, if dysfunctional, family who are completely disconnected from one another until something extraordinary happens in their lives. It stars Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz, with Kay Panabaker and Jimmy M Bennet as their kids. All of them have their own particular problems, and all of them get dealt with in interesting ways.

There are some differences from the unaired pilot, so I'll talk about those, and the episode in general, behind a strategically placed cut. I'm not going to do a recap of the episode, just some thoughts about what I did and did not like, and the changes from the original pilot.

The two sidekicks in this show seriously threaten to steal every scene they're in. They're awesome, in a word. They're funny, they're smart, and they're in just far enough over their heads to make it hillarious.

My main issues with the episode actually are caused because of changes they made in the main cast. Stephen Collins was promoted from recurring to regular, and thus promoted to just being a possible meddling boss for Julie Benz's Stephanie Powell to being probably the Arch Enemy of the season. It was a bit tacked on and he came across a bit too much like the moustache twirling villain in the final scene. Also, the recasting of Daphne's boyfriend made him a bit too obviously a dick. Obviously Chord Overstreet wasn't available anymore since he got cast in Glee, but the new guy was just far too different.

The other changes I liked a lot. It cleaned things up and made them move faster, and took care of some of the dragging that happened in the preview pilot episode.

The show was funny, it was exciting, and I can't wait to see episode two now.
