Jessica;
I completely agree with you when it comes to pointing out that the University did not do a very good job when it came down to saving many of the students lives. Everything that happened was very tragic, and I do feel bad for all the parents that have lost their sons and daughters. Cho had a lot of issues, but I feel that the University could have taken steps to prevent this from happening. As I am reading all the news articles all I can think of is that our society does not pay close attention to “suspicious” incidents that can later lead to tragic events such as this one. One of the articles that I read said that thirty-one days before the shooting happened Cho spent over $500 on the guns and ammunitions. Personally I think that some of the States here have horrible laws when it comes to buying guns. I would be a bit suspicious if a twenty-three years old man bought a gun. Especially with all the tragedies that keep appearing in the news about young adults letting out their anger in such violent ways. The information given about Cho’s play writes shocked me! If I was the professor I would have brought that to the attention his school counselor. What scares me the most is the feeling of loneliness some people can have at college. As a senior in High School, all I hear from my current teachers is “Everything changes in college; professors will not be your babysitters, they are there to teach you” Every troubled person such as Cho is very affected by society, the smallest comments can trigger images and thoughts of actions that would enable him to feel powerful. I bet that at the moment he was shooting his peers he felt powerful; as if he were on top of the world. Imagine; there are many people like Cho in this world. We should feel safe all the time, but it is hard when your government or society does not want to recognize that too much freedom can sometimes lead to tragedies.
Feel free to add anything that you may think of. I’ll be looking forward to others thoughts and comments
