The Ultimate in Uncertainty

Birds... This is a topic I though I would never find myself considering and yet my mind has constantly veered towards it over the last month. As I drive home from work and school each day I find myself staring at the various species of birds loitering the ground and flying sparatically in the air. The funny thing is, I don't particularly like birds. They are fine but I am not drawn to them in any way and certainly would not consider one as a pet. I think it is something greater. Somewhere deep down on an evolutionary/biological level I know something is wrong. I know that the birds sould have gone South already, that there is something that is out of place.

Because of the unseasonably warm weather, the birds have lingered here much longer than usual. They are scattered in the parks an on the farm lands. When you watch them fly in the air it is not in the uniform V one expects but almost a birdlike chaos. It seems as if they know something is wrong, but not what it is so they are confused in their motion. Then every once in awhile you will see the odd bird heading south as if to say, "catch ya later guys, sticking around is not a good idea" but the other birds don't listen. Those rebellious birds were right of course. In a matter of 24 hours, the temperature has dropped from a mild, barable temperature to -40 and they are trapped. They huddle together to keep warm and youc an't help but shake your head and feel a little bit sad for them. If we as humans are confused by the odd climate changes I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for the birds to comprehend what is going on. As the weather progresses, I will continue to keep my eye on them and hope that somehow, with the cold weather, they will be able to fly south and join those rebellious birds who knew better.
