Hype

After reading this week's EUSA propaganda sheet I fear that they are even crazier than I thought.
Anyhow, on with the review of AGM motions. The AGM is on Wednesday 9th Novemeber (strange how they don't mention this in Hype...).

The motions mentioned in hype are as follows

  1. Motion to Twin Edinburgh University With Birzet. In order to support their ``right to education'' without being interefered with by Israel. I really don't have many opinions on this motion, but I'll need a good argument for how this is going to achieve its stated aims and not involve putting our staff and students in harms way
  2. Changing the make-up of the comittee of managment to remove life member/student member distinction. Which, despite the supporters noises otherwise, I suspect will lead to no life members on the committee. As I suspect that such members lead to a moderation of the currently fashionable policies, and generally provide a good deal of experience to the comittee, in addition to life member representational issues, this would be a bad thing.
  3. Ask the university to remove Mugabe's Honourary Degree Well he's already been given it, hasn't he? Should we consider removing such things? Not that I really care.
  4. Forcing the reinvestment of Fresher Week profits in the current financial year With thinking like this how could we possibly have got into that amount of debt?
  5. Removal of bibles from Uni Accomadation. Somewhat obsolete as this was already passed in another commitee. However, surely the best way to fix this is to invite other faiths to place their holy texts there also, rather than removing all texts?
  6. Ban Coca Cola Repeat after me. The student union has to make money or it will sink.
  7. Should we have a no platform policy Freedom of Speech anyone? I suspect most people are capable of telling which side is crazy when the BNP comes to town. To quote slashdot ``Freedom of Speech is not freedom from responsibility''.
  8. Zero Waste A good idea, if it can be implement in a cost neutral or better fashion.

It should be noted that the Hype editors are up to their usual quality in the grammar spelling and typesetting ability, but we wont' go into that.

And to finish, some choice Hype quotes:
``We will instead have a full range of popular drinks in the shops (such as Mecca Cola, Virgin Cola or Barr Cola and Rubicon fruit juices)''

``Although it's cheesy to suggest that the Edinburgh student community is `one big happy family', I'd like to think this isn't too far from the truth'' - Or as a friend pointed out, possibly two big happy families constantly at war.
