Today was a glorious fermented barley tasting day.
Economic Hand is down visiting from San Jose State. We are both in the OC, hanging with Mama-san. Mama-san is by herself because Papa-san is in Galavanting around the middle east with yet another Korean tour group. So Economic Hand and I are here...
This evening, as Mama-san was out with friends due to the untimely passing of one of their husband's friends... Economic Hand and I decided to go to BevMo. We wanted to taste test some delicious alcoholic beverages at the stone countertop of my parent's house.
We started the evening off with two empty glasses, which we promptly filled with Hog Heaven Barleywine-Style Ale. It is brewed by Avery Brewing Company based in the swing state of Colorado. It was quite hoppy with a citrus note...specifically grapefruit. It was delicious and flavorful.
Economic Hand and I swished our mouth with water and then tried Maui Brewing Company Bikini Blonde Lager, which is a flavorful and smooth blonde... We drank this while we had some Papa John's wheat dough, large 5-topping pizza. It was excellent. Poor Economic Hand requires hoppy and robust flavors....couldnt' really taste the Blonde. We tried the Maui IPA, which is smooth and hoppy. It seems like an oxymoron, but it works. EH liked it quite a bit.
We finished our evening with glasses of Allagash Curieux. True, I can't pronounce anything French to save my life, but this was awesome. It is an ale that is aged in oak bourbon barrels... It was smooth, creamy and had a hint of bourbon in the aftertaste. Quite simply sublime. It's a bit pricey for an ale at almost $16 a bottle, but worth it...
Cheers!
PS- I miss the cowgirl.
