When an old hag came up to him in the previous town, Jonghyun didn't take her seriously. She'd spotted him from across the nearly empty market place. Her eyes had widened and she had started screaming-about death and the sea and six days, with one wrinkly hand pointed at him. He’d been taken aback but everyone else seemed to oblivious to the scene the old lady was making.
“Ignore it,” The girl behind the apple stand whispered to him. “She’s gone round the bend, that one.”
And when the old hag actually came up to him, smelling like the earth and rotten fruits, to tell him that he would die in six days because of something half-fish and half-human, Jonghyun rolled his eyes and flirted with the girl behind the apple stand. He’d been travelling the seas for more than three years now, and he’d encountered nothing but storms and the occasional pirate ship.
Six days later, he wished he’d listened to her as he fought for consciousness. He remembered encountering a storm the previous night, where everyone had worked to not let their ship get blown away by the harsh winds. He remembered sleeping in the morning when the storm had died down and waking up to find their ship near an alcove of rocks and a cave some thirty miles away. Remembered heading towards it and remembered hearing amazing voices the nearer they went. And when he looked down to where he thought the voice was most prominent, he’d seen the most beautiful cat like eyes staring back at him, coy lips, pert nose and-he’d walked straight ahead up unto the plank like a man possessed, straight until he fell into the water, closer and closer to the voice, to the beautiful boy, close enough to touch.
And the boy smiled, lifted a hand to Jonghyun’s neck-a hand that wasn’t a hand, his fingers were webbed like a duck's-and pulled Jonghyun down, down, down into the waters. Then his lungs were squeezing in, desperate for air and Jonghyun's consciousness came back to full alert. He tried to struggle and go up for air--and realized his body was bound with a whip. Eyes wide, he looked at the beautiful boy whose hand was still holding the back of his neck, the other arm tugging the cord downwards.
The boy smiled at him, his canines far, far longer than the rest of his teeth. He had a key on a gold cord around his neck and his legs--he didn't have legs.
Oh god, he had a tail.
Jonghyun couldn't breathe.
Half-fish and half-human, the old lady screamed at him in his mind. She was blurring at the edges of his consciousness, dressed in apples, and days in Jonghyun's hometown.
The world faded to black.
(I've never seen mermaids portrayed as sweet or meek. In mytholgy, they sang to sailors and gods. Their voices were enchanting and caused sailors to walk of the deck of their ships and drown. Or they'd drag humans underwater to their kingdoms. Even Disney's Ariel was a headache. Hope you enjoyed your drabble! )
