Notes on Private Women, Public Lives, by Barbara Reyes

p. 46: tale of Jatnil, the Kumeyaay, who was taken to mission san Miguel, confined him, and fed him maize gruel.  One day water was thrown on his head, and he was declared baptized; he was put to work in the orchard, did not like it, and escaped.

VERY IMPORTANT.......>>>>>>> Jatnil led an 1840 uprising in Baja California at Mission Guadelupe del Norte, because of the ill treatment of the Indians by the priest.
Afterwards he was peaceful. (??)
pp. 78ff: Murder of Fr Eudaldo Surroca, Dominican fray.  The India Barbara Gandiaga incited two Indios to kill him.  Was this rebellion?

More likely, give the evidence and their actions, that they acted in revenge for abuse or out of petty jealousy.

p. 114: testimony of Eulalia Perez:  "Fr Sanchez and Fr Zalvidea always showed much concern for the Indians"

p. 115: She says that many people 'ascribe a thousand denigrating epithets' to the frailes without having been there.  Of course, she was white.

p. 120: "The missions system in Alta California owed its success to the virtual enslavement and exploitation of the indigenous population."..."This population asymmetry and the discontent of the Indians forced to remain at the missions against their will and subjected to various forms of brutal treatment resulted in a chronically insecure environment for the settlers and missionaries."

In other words, THE BIG ONE was a slave revolt before it was an earthquake

THIS IS THE BIG UNIFYING CONCEPT!!!!!!!!!!

p. 122: the Mohaves raided settlements, and a military foray went out to deal with them:
35 cavalry
15 infantry
4 artillerymen
1 cannon
"many" neophyte Indians

p. 123:  "Indian flight from the missions was a recurring problem"
Padres had to hire non-Indian (and paid) labor to complete tasks
Santa Cruz had a barracks built to prevent escape:

Jackson, p. 132ff, 205

YES!!

p. 144: Juan Miguel was shut up in the single mens's barracks. He said "I will not be shackled".
p. 145: "The padre said 'Boys, forgive me; you don't know what you are doing'.  Mariano responded, ' I don't forgive you.  When you want to punish, you don't forgive us.', and they finished killing him."

Wow.

"The gentile Indians Matapa and Cualainamey testified that you sent them to kill the Santa Tomas sorceror and the San Miguel Christian woman who accompanied the aforesaid sorceror."  (She denies this accusation).
-Testimony of Barbara Gandiaga
