spring break so far...

Spring break has been rather pleasant for the most part. I decided to stay in Goleta because I have to work on my history thesis that is due early next quarter. I’ve been distracted my miscellaneous relaxation and I hope to get to back to that soon. My mom, dad and brother are coming down on Saturday. It will be the first time they’ve visited since they dropped me off freshman year. I’m pretty excited, but I hope it stops raining.

Some events and the eventful:

Watched some foreign films recently: Lucia, Lucia and Happenstance. I enjoyed both because they fit into my recent thoughts about life, history, friends, relationships, etc.

On Sunday I drove to the mountains to go on a hike with my housemate Julie. (Note: Leslie! I hope you make good use of your gifts! And you better let me know what you name our little friend…) Just as we arrived the engine overheated, coolant started flowing out of the radiator, and smoke fumed out from under the hood. We decided to park and worry about the car after the hike.

The hike was lovely. We walked for an hour or so, and then had lunch at one of the waterfalls. What is it called when rock climbers don’t use ropes? Sculling?
Anyway, I climbed alongside some rocks and braved the cold stream, letting the waterfall pound down on my head. It was pretty invigorating and lots of fun. Julie came in for a bit too, but she didn’t appreciate the cold very much.

To get home, I shifted the car into neutral and we rolled down the mountain for a few miles. Eventually, we made it to the Santa Barbara mission, where I called AAA and had them tow us home. The tow-truck driver was named Angel. It was really interesting learning about his life - 3 kids, works 4 days at 24hr shifts, sleeping in-between, and his co-workers routinely bail out on the job. He could not have been much older than Julie or me. He helped direct me to some autoparts places so that I can repair the busted tube.

Last night I had some awesome dessert with my friends Jessie (Jessica) and Dominic. Jessie cooked up some tasty warmed apples and syrup that we put vanilla icecream over. It was super-yummy. Then we all just laid down in the living, wrestled, rolled Jessie up in a blanket and chatted.

Spending Spring break in Goleta has been a great opportunity to relax and take my time with anything and everything. Many people are gone, the streets are empty, and Biko, my house, it nearly empty as well. While time here is mostly relaxing and peaceful, at times it’s a bit lonely, but I guess that’s okay.

Today after it stopped raining I walked out to the beach and took some pictures. I dropped by Jessie’s to give her some Puffins (cereal), but she wasn’t around. (Note: Allie - great chat with you earlier. You’re a rockstar!) I called home, talked with Nicolas (my little brother) and helped his set up a new email address. He is soooo cool. As I walked him through checking his email, writing a message, forwarding, adding contacts, etc. he took notes! And he even sent me a thank you message! Man, I can’t wait to see him on Saturday.
Well, I suppose those are some brief moments. Some other abbreviated experiences: Pred on my run through Deveroux, “super-feet” (rollerblades) are the transportation of choice if I need to run errands on campus (people instantly pay more attention to you, I gave this nice old woman some peanuts at the free box, I surprised this woman carrying on a conversation with her son in Spanish by commenting halfway through. It was a bit embarrassing because they’d been commenting on my hair! But all in good spirit.

If there are conclusions to the brief moments of reflection I’ve shared, here are two that may seem irrelevant: one, the ocean appears infinite; and two, everything happens for a reason.

Cheers, everyone! I miss you and I hope your Spring break is just what you need.
