Truth first - I am a Journey fan. Have been for an extremely long time. Got to see them in concert twice back in their glory days (yes, I'm that old). And I had pretty much given up on ever hearing anything from them ever again after the box set came out.
So...
I had heard a few weeks back that they had a new album coming out, with a new lead singer. Actually, they did an entire story on it on 'CBS Sunday Morning' - mainly about the new lead singer, and the changes the band has been through.
Today, we're shopping at Sam's Club, and what should I see but a new Journey album. Joy! So I buy it, take it home, and promptly get busy doing whatever other stuff I usually do on Sunday afternoons (like laundry).
'bout two hours later, I wander back to my Mac to find my significant other sitting there. With my new Journey album already unwrapped and with one of the discs already in the computer. He stops the player, then says 'Listen to this'.
He plays one of the tracks from the re-recorded disc.
(Backstory: Journey did a very brave thing with this new CD. Not only did they go find a new lead singer (a very inspiring story that I won't repeat right the moment), and record new music with this new singer - they also re-recorded some of their greatest hits from back in the day with this new singer.
Yes, the stuff that was sung by Steve Perry. As I said, brave. And they included a disc with this music along with their new music.)
The first track of the re-recorded music is 'Only The Young'. Before he hits Play, he says "You're gonna get chills".
He was so right.
The new guy sounds amazing. A lot like Steve Perry, yet he still manages to make the oldies his own. And the band sounds absolutely magnificent. So magnificent that I ejected the CD and took it with me while I ran to the store to buy some dinner.
If you saw someone driving a Matrix playing what sounded like Journey very loudly sometime this afternoon, singing along to 'Don't Stop Believin' ' very much off-key...it was me. I apologize if you heard it.
Funny how happy well-done rerecorded 20-year old hits can make a person.
