Had the craziest of all crazy gigs yesterday with steel drums.
We played at the Hilton for this law firm party on the 15th floor. Let me tell you, not fun to ride that elevator 15 or so times to transport all the drums up and down. Seriously, motion sickness to the extreme.
So first things first, we're in the valley trying to order pizza and no place is open or will deliver fast enough. So we end up driving to Taco Bell, which I wasn't crazy about, but once I ordered a quesedilla and realized how hungry I was.. it pacified me.
So the drive in is rather uneventful, besides TB we mostly listened/watched our iPods. Then we get to the Hilton and jump out, five kids, no leaders and start the adventure. We take some stuff to the room and this lady kind of directs us and we're like... yeah... we're the band?.. and after the adults get there we're setting up the floor and they need to move this tiki thing and they break it because oops it was made of paper and tape (not even duct tape, shame) and this lady gets really mad because they "special ordered it" (from Prom Parties International we think) and it cost a lot of money. Unfortunate.
And let me tell you, law people, they're kinda uptight. We played an entire gig list with no real response, and it wasn't until after our break when some random guy called us a bowling team, when they were eating dinner that they really even noticed that we were playing. Whatever.
They fed us dinner, we sat in a corner behind the DJ and talked about how bananas are going extinct, and people who have never gone camping. Oh and desert. Mmm. There was halibut. It was good.
So then we're packing up and leaving... and these people from some other party there who are a little inebriated come down some stairs and are like "are those the kegs?!" and we're like "yeah... you try drinking one of those..."
So then we're taking the drums outside to put them in the truck, and this guy who was also a little wasted, keeps repeating everything Mary says as she walks out the door, at first it was just like "wow!" and "woah!" but it got kind of annoying, so I told him to shut up but Mary thought I was talking to her and she's all apologizing to me.. silly girl.
So the ride home is much nicer than the ride in. Oh did I mention they gave us those glow thingys? I had three, and then Marshall gave me like five so I had plenty. So me and Mary and Foster and Kaija spend the entire ride home talking about our experiences with drunk people, cruises, roller coasters, theme parks. And it was very fun. One of my favorite gigs. Maybe my favorite gig.
And then Mary and I timed our getting out of the car very well, and it was good.
Ah the life of a musician.
