One of the things I absolutely hate hearing from people when they hear about my job is, "Oh my gosh, you must have the easiest job in the world! You must be making so much money since there are tons of dogs in this area."
NO. I do not make money, I make a living. And not only that, I work my ass off. If I were to get paid a decent rate hourly for all that I do, then we might be talking, but I don't get that so the amount of pay to actual work done would really put me well below minimum wage.
A great example of how tough it is to be a small business owner is this last tax season. Being self-employed, all three of us girls got hit hard by the self-employment tax and ended up owing a lot of money. Anna and I had made a couple thousand dollars of profit from 2010, and all of it went to pay taxes (in my case, I had to dip into my personal savings too). It was incredibly frustrating and discouraging because I had been feeling so optimistic about the business and how hard we've been working and really hoping for a payoff this year.
I love what I do, and I love my business. It's the hardest and most accomplishing project I've ever worked on, and I love that every day I face new challenges and learning experiences. But on days when I'm clearing out my accounts to pay the bills, it's so hard not to feel like I'll never get ahead in the rat race.
