east coast

So I'm in amherst now, which is about an hour and a half west of boston. It is weird. I can't really explain it, but it feels so different than UO. The library is 26 floors tall. I'll explain more about it later.

I've been in massachusetts since monday. Its both everything and nothing like I imagined it. The thing that really stands out to me is that everything is decrepit and rusted. Everything is just lower quality, including the people. I can't really explain it, but you notice it. Anybody who thinks springfield oregon is a dump has never seen springfield massachusetts. I took the greyhound bus there and its quite and experience. Traveling by bus is cool, because you really get the feel of wherever you are. You intereact with all kinds of people you would never even see most of the time. Everyone is completly polite to me, but as I sit in the bus station in my portland trail blazers sweater and my nice backpack and suitcase and goofy hair you can just tell that I'm from a completly different place than everyone there, geographically and economically. Its like a different country here. I feel like I could write a book on it, just on the subtle differences that mean so much more than you realize.

Traveling alone is cool. I admire max for going to africa, that takes balls.

And I shouldnt be too hard on the east coast. Boston is an awesome city. It feels a lot like portland, but a couple hundred years older. It has an element of cool, of culture that portland can't compete with. It might just be the arrogance that everyone here has. In portland, people are pretentious, but its contrived. Here, its just established that Boston and the east coast are far superior to oregon. Nobody questions it or doubts it. They don't get defensive because they don't have to. But I think that I really want to live in a city for a couple years. Eugene is cool, but its not a real city. You cannot experience as much in eugene as in portland, and you cant experience as much in portland as you can in boston. Its all up to you to take advantage of, and I want to start taking advantage of it. BUt to really experience it, you have to take some risks. Thats where it gets tough.

America is fascinating
