C'mooooooon. Who doesn't like Star Trek, in its many variations, just a little, or a lot?!

Well, with my geek-wood well and truly raging I thought I'd finally post a few thoughts on the latest MMO - Star Trek Online. I missed the beta of STO at the end of last year (which was a little annoying because I'd paid for a beta key) so had to wait until ( Read more... )

You do build up a fleet of ships as you progress through the ranks but you captain just one at a time. I think if you could captain a fleet it would get VERY hectic. Plus in the big battles you're automatically teamed with other players (saves all that hunting around, looking desperate for teammates for the bigger missions) so you're often working as part of a much larger group.

You can also purchase new ships at any level (once unlocked) so for instance I have an Admiral's Reconnaissance Science Vessel and an Escort so depending on the missions, you can chop and change between specialised ships. I have a fleet of about 8 ships now to choose from.

Re: customisation of ships - it's pretty wide. You can create variations of each ship, using parts from 3 base models of each (hull, nacelles, neck, deflectors, engine, saucer, etc). Then there are about 24 styles (patterns) plus a huge amount of colour customisation. On the inside you can also choose the type of bridge for each ship and THEN you can visit the bridge, and interact with each of your bridge officers at their stations! Which is kinda fun. Cryptic have already released new ship classes/models and bridges so the customisation is growing too.

Last I saw, they were asking players to choose what to add next to ships - more ship interiors and Captain Ready Rooms were high on the list.

Oh, and your bridge officers are equally as customisable as your main character so it really is a very personal team you build.
