Warp speed, Mr. Sulu!

"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."

Those words were first heard by the American public 50 years ago. Variations on them have been used to start each Trek series and movie.

Those words can be taken as a powerful challenge to us, if we're willing to accept it. We know that if we want to move forward, we have to move out of our comfort zones. We have to try new things and expand our horizons -- our mental horizons, if nothing else. To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life...

There is only one truly "undiscovered country," where we can say with absolute certainty that no explorer has ever walked: the future, both our personal individual futures and the collective future of our world and our race.

Shall we sit in our comfortable chairs and content ourselves with only reliving today over and over? Or shall we boldly go?

For myself, I'm of a mindset best summed up by a motto engraved upon a sword blade in Heinlein's book "Glory Road": Dum vivimus, VIVAMUS!

Whilst we live, let us LIVE!

Come on, let's go check out this undiscovered country together, shall we?

Warp speed, Mr. Sulu!
