6X17 "PUSH" In-Depth Calzona Review: One word. BRILLIANCE.

Wow. ~ Wow. wow. wow. wow. wow.
I went through a roller coaster ride of emotions throughout this episode of Grey's Anatomy. Within the 11 minute mark I had literally ROFL'd TEN times. That's a feat for the history books considering the fact that Grey's Anatomy is a DRAMA and not Modern Family which PS. is HILARIOUS. So yeah, it had A) LAUGHTER. Not enough to deem it as epic you say? Get the full list of emotions first: there was ROFL moments, pain and angst, REVELATIONS! OH THE REVELATIONS! Squeals of pure JOY and excitement. ROMANCE. Inappropriate comments from MARK. SCORE! Moments. Moments that make you feel inspired, make you want to fight, make you GASP! Moments that make your heart cry out in pain for the characters that develop SOOO much and not just our home team CALZONA, but ALL the characters.

YEAP. Grey's Anatomy hit the mark on this one. No, they RAISED the BAR. THEY RAISED the BAR SO FRIGGIN HIGH I can't even see it. Where are you bar? Where are you? But it doesn't even matter because this EPISODE was THAT GOOD I literally ran around the house screaming "BEST GREY'S EVER! BEST GREY'S EVER!" Wow.

So enough rambling. Let’s start reviewing while I am still somewhat lucid.

I think some of you may agree when I say that Grey’s Anatomy has been a bit drab lately. It was starting to get on my nerves, maybe because there was little Calzona interaction, or the fact that they ignored a lot of problems and kept the stories of each character going at a mundane pace. Whatever it was, I wasn’t really pleased. Not DISPLEASED. Cause let’s face it, it’s still Grey’s. But nothing EPIC. Nothing to celebrate.

WHAT STANDS OUT THIS EPISODE: What makes “PUSH” so jaw-droppingly brilliant? It was charcter development, everyone GREW. EVERYONE. It wasn’t just story-telling, it was so much more. You feel so much closer to ALL the characters, it was balanced. You learn about everyone and in they in turn also learn things about themselves. They have REVELATIONS, they have newfound understanding. And it really makes your heart jump.

Let’s start with the best of the couples. And yes I am biased. Surprise? Just going to come out and say it. [MAJOR Spoiler Alert! In case you missed it before] **just did Calzona, will review more couples if you guys like my review. If not. It’s cool. Just had to blow off some steam. Happy steam.***

CALZONA: Arizona and Callie start this episode on different sides of the Mark+Teddie sexual tension spectrum. Arizona proposes to Teddy that Mark is a candybar. “Why not have a little fun? Mark is like CanDY! Eat it. Forget about it.” Callie, on the other hand, pushes Mark to be more than just a manwhore. Callie pushes him to have a family, have the life he’s always wanted. CONFLICT #1. No biggie right? Kinda. This conflict introduces the issue of children. It’s brushed away lightly when Mark joins them at the lunch table but it’s there. Cue into Arizona’s scene with her patient with the suffering parents. She watches closely as they torment themselves and swim in the guilt of having hug their son, a simple act that turned detrimental instantly. Arizona is understanding of this, she IS after all a PEDS-GODDESS who is humble but brilliant, she’s seen this before. Time and time again. After she tells the parents their kid is going to be okay, she leans back into the waiting room chair and lets out a HUGE sigh. Perhaps having received some of the pain projected onto her from the worrisome parents of Noah. Meanwhile, Callie is on top of her game. She is the GURU of relationships. Of condoms. Of third dates. Of suggestive “are you ready”. Then the pail of water falls as we enter into the final Calzona scene. Sure, we’ve all been looking up, waiting for the drama, but it still hurts when it falls. Arizona breaks Callie’s slur of excitement and interrupts her perfect picture. The painting of the picture. The PERFECT relationship. The kids. The big house. The “sage sane advice”. It breaks when Arizona says “no kids. And by no I mean nooooo YIKES. to the kids.” Callie’s initial reaction is a don’t-joke-about-things-like-that chuckle. Then realization comes. Arizona’s not joking. Callie’s face is contorted, it’s broken, she’s scared as she replies “but…you saved him?” We see her look of confusion, her look of utter fear at this revelation. Because the kid thing? Probably doesn’t come up on the first date and it’s always been assumed that Arizona is a kids person. SHE’s FREAKIN’ PEDS! I’m with Callie on this one. It was unforeseen. Not by the fans, who have been clutching their seats and pulling their hair out in anticipation. But as a CHARACTER on the show, it’s definitely unforeseen. Who would’ve known? Who could’ve known? The peppy, Heely girl, who has teddy bears and rainbows? She doesn’t want kids. Then again, it’s been said that this happens to those in Peds. It’s reasonable. They see the pain, they see the anguish. They see the responsibilities of parenthood, the angst that comes with a sick child or even a small slip like Noah. It’s scary. And Arizona is firm when she says no to the kids. Yet Callie has always wanted kids, she offered with Mark Sloan (still not mentioned as a conflict-inducing problem) and she also made it clear that she wanted kids and marriage with Arizona when her daddy came to visit awhile back.

So where do we stand? Drama. Angst. It’s looming before us. It’s undeniable. It’s there. Can Callie and Arizona fight it? The age-old serious relationship breaker upper: the kid issue. Me? I’m a dreamer. I hope for the best and block out the rest. So here’s to some drama, a little angst, but they better end up together.

& what if they do break up? How do you think that will play out? I'm almost certain there will be a break up of some sort. Probably in the parking lot. At night. That's the Grey's style for a couple to go. Erica/Callie Mark/Lexie. History tells a heartbreaking story. I'm guessing it will play out with Callie breaking up with Arizona and walking away into the night, leaving Arizona standing there, stunned, as she looks at the fading back of her Calliope. Yeap. I'm worried. And scared. And hoping and wishing that Grey's gods remember how much time they've invested into the two of them.

I keep replaying the last scene, at the 34 min mark, where Callie is running her tests for the hundredth time where Arizona says “maybe that’s cause it WON’T work.” But Callie says “hmm.. you’re just not invested in it like I am…” Double meaning much? It hurts to find things like this.

Better get ready to pick up the pieces of my heart.
