Should sleep. Can't sleep. Won't sleep. Such is the curse of my brain hahaha. So I thought I'd write down some thoughts on last night's Eclipse premiere. It's mostly impressions but there are some spoilers in it too.
First of a big ol' fucking thank you to Cineplex Odeon who in their cheap bastard ways didn't want to give up a theatre on cheap Tuesday. We waited in line for 2.5 hours, in the hallway of the theater. It was as hot as Texas in there and as loud as a concert. I'd never been so glad to sit down in my life.
This was my first midnight show for the Twilight series. For Twilight and New Moon they premiered the movie at 10 PM. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I came out of the movie wired and had trouble falling asleep and then woke up early. It was worth it though. I had a great time.
IMO, Eclipse is the best of the series. My sister said it had too much kissing. Is that even possible? I don't think so. I have to give props to David Slade the director. The life he breathed into this movie made it feel much more like the book to me than either of the first two. The movie didn't seem long at all. It was well paced and unrushed. It had a better balance of seriousness and humour, and intensity and relief.
I am not a big fan of Melissa Rossenberg's screenplay writing. I think she does a good job with some of the dialogue but there was still elements that were so awkward. I would think by the third movie she'd be past that. It was better but still needs improvement.
The effect of a vampire being broken into pieces was hella cheesy, but in a pleasant change, the sparkling was pretty well done. I think maybe it was because in the first two movies the scene was set to shock us, like saying 'omg he sparkles in the sun, freak!' but in Eclipse it was more subtle and understated. Well done.
You can't see the moon during a snowstorm. I'm just sayin'...
No offense intended towards Bryce Dallas Howard but she's just not my Victoria. She wasn't wild enough. She's a gorgeous woman, refined and elegant, but I missed the sense of rawness and wildness that Rachelle Lefevre brought to the character. There was far less Victoria than I expected. Less of the wolf pack than I expected too. And much more Riley for that matter. And I'm not saying that BDH didn't do a good job with the role, just that she didn't play the character the way I see the character. She wasn't desperate enough, not uncontrolled enough.
Xavier Samuel did a fantastic job as Riley, very much like I pictured him. His performance was intense and controlled yet had this underlying sense of chaos, like at any moment he could blow. I thought he did a phenomenal job.
Jackson looked very handsome in his confederate uniform! I admit to seeing Adam/Amanda Jackson, his character on Criminal Minds, come out once or twice during his performance. It was kind of creepy. Something about the way her purses his lips I think hahaha.
Alice and Jasper were so cute together in the movie. I have a couple crush on them.
Kellan could have been mistaken for one of the village people in the outfit he wore during the fight scene. I liked Elizabeth's hair though. It was cool.
Anyone else think that Peter sounded like he had an accent more in this movie? I did...and yet he doesn't have an accent? Makes you go hmmm....
I loved that they changed the colour of the Cullen's eyes during the movie. So much more like the book!
What I wanted more of:
-More tension during the confrontation between Victoria, Riley, Edward and Bella.
-More background story on Rosalie. That scene just didn't connect properly for me. Rosalie was emotional but it didn't gel with the way the told her past for me...it was too detatched or something.
-More tent scene. I get why they filmed it the way they did but it was the scene I was looking most forward to.
What I wanted less of:
-Bella's wig. I mean come the fuck on, it's a multi-million dollar production. I think they could have afforded a decent wig for Kristen Stewart instead of recycling Jacob's wig from Twilight.
-Less Jacob. I give props to Taylor Lautner. He made me hate him, which is what he was supposed to do, but I still could have done with less of him.
The movie had the perfect amount of Charlie and Renee, enough to know they loved Bella but not enough to feel meddlesome.
I could go on and on but I think I've said everything I pondered while trying to fall asleep. I had a group of girls sitting behind me that continually cracked me up. I think their comments made the movie even better for me. I truly enjoyed the movie.
