into the Night

I'm not trying to pull away
So stop pushing me over
I just think we need some time apart
A minute. A day. An hour.

Sometimes I don't think we see ourselves
Even standing - eye to eye
The mirror holds, too many lies.

So we take to running
Off into the night
Looking for something
Anyone
Who will open their door.
It's easier to run
Than to stay and fight.

I don't want that for you and I
Time is a gift - I'm not sure we've prayed
Had we did we wouldn't say
Things like "Why can't I get a break?"

Sometimes I don't think we see ourselves
Even standing - side by side
Sometimes love holds, too many lies.

So we take to hiding
Behind a laugh and smile
Looking for something
Anyone
Who will smile back.
A lie feels good when
The truth hurts so much.

But that's a risk we have to take;
I'll hurt you if you hurt me.
And when it's time to say "I'm sorry"
I'll be there - waiting.

So let's take to running
Off into the night
Looking for something
Anyone
Who will open their door.
It's easier to run
Than to stay and fight.

But at least,
we'll be side by side.
