1) Is it better to love or be loved?
To love, I think, regardless of the situation. Because the loving part is the part that we personally participate in, the part that we actually experience in our psyche.

OMG my family had a sheltie for years and years...still miss him. He was unbelievably smart--we once counted all the words we knew he knew, well over 60 in 5 different languages (english, french, spanish, german, and latin).

jake was a border collie actually, little bit bigger than a sheltie
he only knew english and... dog
as far as i know...

Dog (yes, that was his name) went deaf when he got old, and my parents figured out a basic sign language with him. Tap their mouths for hungry, hold up the leash for walk, point to the door for out, and so on.

jake was mostly deaf the last few years, but he seemed to understand everything pretty well
he was also partially blind, so i don't think sign language would have worked
but he was awesome
i miss my puppy

He and his pet cat, Screamer, were unbelievable together. When Dog went deaf, Screamer figured it out by yelling at him, nothing, yelling louder, nothing, walking up to him, shoving his face in (sleeping) Dog's ear, and yelling. Dog heard that, levitated, and Screamer sat down with a look like, "yep, that was the problem." Ever after, if Dog was asleep and Screamer wanted something, the cat would tap him with his nose or a paw. Amazing.
