Extended Author's Notes: The Dreams of Captain J Harkness

Jul 20, 2008 22:06

Someone told me this weekend that posting extensive author's notes was actually relatively common in certain fandoms, regardless of fic length, and not just vanity.

Well, I'm sure it is just vanity, but I'm posting mine for The Dreams of Captain J Harkness anyway. Obviously, if you've not read it, now would be a sensible time to do so.

These notes comprise the wide and diverse array of the numerous sources of inspiration that coalesced into a piece that surprised me in its eagerness to get out.

I.
- I had a blueberry scone for breakfast (that morning; I often eat a chocolate chip one).
- "Physics of the Impossible" : plasma window
- A trip I took to Hawaii, during which I hang-glided, during which I saw two Sperm whales frolic like seals.
- A bit of "Finding Nemo"

II.
- "North and South" (the BBC production of the novel by "Elizabeth Gaskell" and nothing to do with Patrick Swayze)
- "Star Trek" the original series, "Who Mourns for Adonais?"

III.
- "Einstein's Dreams" (one of the specific chapters)
- The Bacardi fly "Born to Be Alive" commercial
- Quote from T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of Alfred J Prufrock":

Should I, after tea and cakes and ices,
Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis?

IV.
- Tosh's dance in "And You Loved Things Just Because" (final round of WIAD)
- The Shins, "New Slang"
- The water glass scene in "Miss Congeniality"

V.
(Um, here I got nothing.)

The general concept of the fic was taken from a book I noticed at Barnes & Noble called "Einstein's Dream." I'd read it when it first came out in 1994, so the book being out on display really caught my eye (I thought it curious that an older book like that was on display). It occurred to me that the fourth part of "What Happens In a Hundred Lifetimes" starts with a dream like those in the books, and it'd be awesome to write more. Hence, fic, and in the ever-popular 5 times format, no less.
