Time for alittle geekness

So it's 5am in the morning. I couldn't sleep..bleh. On my list of things to do was to setup samba (file sharing between *nix machines and windows) on my mp3 server (houses gigs and gigs of all my songs, plays through my surroundsound system on the TV). In the past I have been using SCP (secure copy protocol) to transfer all of my files from the desktop to the mp3 server, which if anyone is aware, is a royal pain in the ass.

So I spent an hour fuckin' around with it, for the life of me I couldn't get my external USB drive (80gb) to be seen by windows XP..no matter what I threw at it. Stepped back, took a deep breath, took it bit by bit before I realized that my USB drive is being mounted as root, and XP hates you if you try and mount a root filesystem as a guest..stupid security. So I had to edit my /etc/fstab to allow users to mount the harddrive. Mounted it as my mp3 user, set it up in samba, and boom! it worked. This will go a long way in helping out with drag/drop of my files.

As I write this, my old testbed (P166mhz) running BSD is compiling samba (should take another day or two..bleh). It's a testbed for a script I wrote that auto rips my CD's to MP3's and uses CDDB to auto label the songs. But alas the harddrive is only big enough to house the applications. So Im hoping *Crosses fingers* that I can mount my mp3 servers mp3 share to the BSD box to just rip and drop into the mp3 server.

With any luck, what Im hoping to do with this testbed is learn I/O programming to allow me to push a button to automatically run the script. Hoping to get a casetronic case (tiny case) with a miniITX Mobo, LCD pannel and buttons. And have it totally stand-alone. Slap a CD in it...push a button, auto rips onto a CD, show's status via LCD. It too will be a testbed for a stand-alone DVD ripper, so I can get my giant bookshelf of DVD's onto a server farm hooked up to a ghetto wannabe Tivo and clear up a bookshelf. That way I can just boot up the wannabe Tivo, select the DVD I want to watch and boom, starts without having to dig around for DVD's. It's gonna need a shitload of Harddrive space, but what the hell, gigs are cheep these days.

enough rambling...off to bed!
