late night

I don't watch much TV... however, I used to watch certain things.
one of those things was The Tonight Show.
Johnny Carson was on point, funny without resorting to bitterness or catering to a wide audience.
his audience was made up of insomniacs, for the world was not a 24 hour mercury vapor bright enough to be day kind of place.
at least not in my area.
and then there was a newcomer - David Letterman.
He was awesome. he destroyed fruit because he could. he threw things off buildings, because he could.
and then he had Johnny Carson as a guest.
and carson showed up with his own desk.
brilliance.
Johnny inherited the show from Merv Griffith. a late night comedy show before the network went off the air.
now they don't so much go off the air.
maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to shut down from time to time...
might have more time to write shows rather than dream up the next tear jerker of 'whose your daddy' (I really have issues with this show - whose your daddy, as far as i am concerned comes from the gay community in a dom / sub relationship... making middle class white hetero's perform on a show with this title has to be someone's idea of fun)

Carson was great - he wasn't the funniest guy on the show on any given night - he had guests, not a supporting cast, he invited them in, gave them a drink, and a chance to shine.

and he knew when to retire... it's really amazing how respectable the guy is...
and he will be missed.
