Well, last night I saw the final Harry Potter movie, and I quite liked it. I'm also very glad I didn't read the books; as is usual, everyone I knew who read the books thought the movies were lacking ( Read more... )

The HP books aren't too badly written after the first few (Epilogue in book seven totally not included cos it's CRAP), but yeah, teen books do tend to assume non-literary readers. *cough*TWILIGHT*Cough* Go! Rant! Tis fun! :D

I loved the books cos I read them at the right age, so the movies do slightly dissapoint me. Draco has a much stronger character arc in the books through all the death eater, Dumbledor killy stuff and his Dad's imprisonment and whatnot, then it gets spoilt by his joining the final battle, because everything JK Rowling sets up suggests that he really wouldn't have done that. I havn't read a good HP fic ever though so I dunno if the fic-ers do it better...

Young adult writing is good for teenagers and adults who aren't too fond of reading, especially sci-fi or fantasy. If you're an adult to enjoys reading big words, between the lines and sci-fi or fantasy, it's torture. You just sit there going: Yes I see what you're doing there plz stop explaining it to me! Arrrrggghhh! *flings book away*

My girlfriend in college tried to get me to read the first HP book and I had to keep politely declining. It was awkward but I'd read my fair share of secretly powerful/skilled young person saves the village/kingdom/empire books years earlier. I still love those empowering, heroic stories, but with more complex writing.

I disagree. I've read all the books, which I like. But I think that, for the most parts, the movies(particularly the later ones under the direction of David Yates)are fantastic as well. You know, as movies in and of themselves rather than literal adaptations of the books.
