Never mind Rome, we're being thoroughly impressed by the BBC's 2006 docudrama series Ancient Rome: The Rise And Fall Of An Empire. It's basically a proper drama series with a little bit of narration -- full-on character acting throughout, and a nicely articulate script. Michael Sheen just did the truly astonishing, and made Nero sympathetic!
And even with a fair amount of implied debauchery, it's kind of refreshing to see a Roman Empire drama series in which who's shagging who is nowhere near the main question of the day...
